RSPCA - long rant....

Interesting problem - I'm wondering why you didn't go down and check the animal yourself before transporting him home for 2 hours? To have a "hands on" review of his condition before costing yourself £150? Surely cheaper for you to have popped down and reassured the person who is loaning?

Reference the RSPCA - a few years ago - a local horse was reported to them (genuine case) and they did nothing.... very sad.

I'm glad your animal is okay and has been sorted ref his feet. x

"Every 25 seconds someone in England and Wales dials our 24-hour cruelty line - 0300 1234 999 - for help, and last year we received more than 1.3 million phone calls.

We investigated 141,280 cruelty complaints,

My arithmetic makes that about 9% of phone calls actually investigated. Out of those only about 1500 will end up in prosecutions (varies each year).

Can someone check this please? I have just been told that it is actually 0.001%!!!

Sorry but this bit of paper with ticks on it sounds like nonsense. If there was something wrong with the horse, a genuine RSPCA inspector would speak to the OWNER as well as the loanee - no question about that. I simply do not believe that this is the RSPCA. it's all totally wrong, and NOT how they operate.

I know a lot of people hate the RSPCA, but they do a horrendously difficult job with only 400 or so inspectors for the whole country. But I am sure this complaint was not handled by one of them. sm x

I have had the paper with the ticks on too. I have chucked it now but it had questions such as 'Is there adequate shelter' 'Does animal have access to water' etc with yes/no tick boxes beside them. The RSPCA rang me two weeks after I recieved my bit of paper, even though I rang them as soon as I recieved the notice, it went to the main line and they just said they would log my call.

I am now waiting on someone else reporting me as one of my mini shetlands is lame. He contracted joint ill as a day old foal and although he isn't in pain he does look like a wonky donkey most of the time! I have told most of the people who overlook the field not to worry about his lameness but still reckon I will have the RSPCA calling.

I guess the RSPCA didn't know who the horses belonged to, they obviously got in somehow and put the note through the door of the nearest house who is actually our landowner. I rang them immediately and the lady I spoke to said she would pass my contact details on to the inspector who would get back to me. As I said, it was 2 weeks later when she did actually ring.

hmmmmmmmm things have gone right downhill. That is not good at all - no wonder people do have major probs with them. I mean, how worrying is it to be complained about in the first place ? sm

I was devastated when I was reported. I live in a small village and thought everyone knew me and knew I would never let an animal suffer. The field is overlooked by perhaps a dozen houses and I speak to pretty much all of them so most if not all of them knew that Ellie was 29 and was being seen by a vet regularly. It has made me very suspicious of people around the village, which is such a shame as it is a lovely place to live.

Yup, that's the trouble, it causes so much bad feeling. But then, on the other side of the coin, there are so many that are not well cared for, and never get reported. People can be very quick to call and make complaint, which in cases like yours is such a shame, but then think they can "leave it to someone else" when a report is needed cos they don't want to get involved.

I think it's such a thorny issue for so many horse owners, but if the job is done properly, so much ill feeling can be avoided. For example, calling back the complainant is so important, to put the record straight. sm x

So they were obviously that concerned about the welfare of your horse that another 2 weeks would be ok....!!!!
TBH I have not had my follow up call yet and I have wasted enough money so I certainly won't be calling them.

I will though be writing a letter of complaint addressing the whole situation and feedback on how things could be handled, I also want a local officer to come and see him to prove my point - even with limited knowledge would identify he is unlevel ( at times )and not hoping lame or as she stated 'concerned for his welfare as he is in so much pain'

I went for an interview about 10 years ago to be an RSPCA inspector. The morning consisted of being told how good the pension scheme was when you finished working for them and how most of the job was putting animals down. In the afternoon, I had my interview with some chief inspector which was basically him telling me about putting animals down and how the RSPCA has a lack of animal shelters in the country.
I got a letter and was called back for a final interview. I wrote to them turning them down explaining that I didn't want to work for an animal welfare organisation which could offer such a good pension scheme but couldn't put any money into building animal shelters and whose main objective appeared to be destroying animals. I wanted to work in animal welfare - I did not apply because there was a good pension at the end of it!
I have also just moved my horses from a yard where the YO used to work for an horse welfare organisation (not RSPCA). I saw him leaning into stables hitting horses around the head with a shavings fork just because they had put their heads out to nibble the haylage which was outside the door - normal behaviour for any horses. I also saw him hitting horses with alkathene piping. I wanted to report him, but in the end decided moving my horses was probably easier - and just before I left, I told the horse's owner what I had seem him doing after he told me that his horse had become head-shy.......some welfare charities are completely hopeless. The only one I donate to is The Brooke.....
