I got a call tonight from two of my friends from the yard, they had found a shetland pony tied to a lampost by the neck using a car seatbelt. The RSPCA would not attend they obviously thought leaving the pony there was ok. The police were nearly as bad, at least they showed up but then handed responsiblity for the pony over to my friends and then left
I think the word PREVENTION should be dropped from the RSPCA name would he have to starve to death before they did anything

Is this the full story you have written here ? It seems that a lot of RSPCA bashers recently have only been giving half, or even getting it wrong altogether.

Same response my friend had when horses running loose next to an a road. No-one (police were my big upset as could have caused carnage) turned up and friend left by herself at night to herd into a lovely yard.

In your case tied up rspca should've done something. What about whw and bhs, have you called them?

Do your friends still have the pony ?
I hope they got the police officers name and number if they have.
Poor little chap ( the pony I mean)

I say again, the facts given are very scant, and it is unfair to demonise the RSPCA without knowing the full story. There is more to this than the OP is letting on.

If you are trying to say we can't believe the OP, why should everyone believe that there is more to it? How can you 100% say it didn't happen like OP says?

In my experience it is just as likely to have happened than not to have happened.

In the same way the RSPCA bashing threads can get irritating, the people who always show up on them saying they must be lies also gets irritating.

If you don't believe the story, just ignore it!

As an ex-Inspector I have a good idea of what goes on. Sorry to irritate you with that fact.

B2B I am not saying we cannot believe the OP, of course not, I but I am saying that the full story is not being told here, and the RSPCA are being bashed AGAIN when they may not have done anything wrong - as in a recent thread, ooo last week was it ?

For your info horses on the road are a police issue, the police should have 'green yards' specifically for loose horses on the highway to be held. the RSPCA cannot just take someone else's property and hold it. Same as stray dogs.

Sorry but this one also annoys me!

There are an awful lot of inspectors and saying you used to be one doesn't make an ounce of difference to this story.
I'm not trying to be argumentative :p I have no doubt you were a very good inspector especially with horsey knowledge :)

I just think all the RSPCA threads go exactly the same way:

This happened, RSPCA were rubbish.
Everyone with a bad experience comments saying they aren't surprised.
Everyone with a good experience comments saying they aren't as bad as people make out.
OP is made out to be a liar.
500 pages later and everyone still has the same view of the RSPCA as they did when the thread started.

:p

Im sorry to say this is absolutly true, i was at home when i got a call can i bring my horsebox over to collect the pony from the side of the road, the RSPCA told my friends they dont collect strays from the roadside if he is a stray was he supposed to stay tied to the lampost until his owner found him and what if he had been dumped how long do you think would be ok to leave him. The police signed responsibilty over to my friends and left what would you do in that situation
also its a bit dificult to say you have nothing to do with horses when you have just left the yard in your yard stuff and smell like a horse

Always, if you report anything to the police, get a reference/crime number to give you one they have to have entered it on the computer and once it's there they can't ignore it. (Advice from my tame police officer)

It's also a good idea in the above circumstances to avoid telling them that you have anything to do with horses so they can't pass the buck. To be fair to the police, very few stations have the facilities to deal with "stray" horses and would have to pass the details on to a welfare organisation if the person who reports the situation is unable or unwilling to take it on a temp basis

It's the police who are in error here .

Molly Moonie... What bit of my post did you miss? My point was that police were the ones I was annoyed at. In ops case it wasn't loose on a road it was tied up. So what are you on about....

I totally believe it... saw 2 trotters tied to a road sign 4 ft from a road (b road) but busy, obviously they had been there a little while and had managed to tangle all four feet and themselves together.. drivers had stopped to try and help but horses were spooked, man said police had been called but 40 mins later they were no further forward, I phoned rspca who said they would send officer out, 2 hours later I had (with help) freed horses and stood like a numpty... man came told us all to f off these were his horses etc, rspca officer rang me later in afternoon to say she couldn't find the horses ?? then proceeded to ask questions.. in the end it turned out this lady deals with this guy regularly but cant touch him..her words were he has 16 horses in the field down the road which are terrible but good doers keep feeding them im hoping after this winter they will be thin enough to take away... so prevention my arse, and she finished the conversation with well wev already pts 4 of his so hopefully we can get the rest !! If she knows they will be so bad in few months why not take away now !!

i qoute you again as if you think you were misinterpreted its pretty easy to see how. You state running loose. You state same response to previous thread implying same response by RSPCA. Then to be fair you state police are your biggest upset. Interesting how assumptions can be made?

Green yards DO exist.

Ok I have had the opposite experience of the RSPCA they visited a very elderly horse about 3 times plus over a long period of time. Why because a member(s) of the public had seen him lying down a lot. He lived in a luxurious field but they came knock knock knocking at the door. They knocked each time to tell us we had been reported by a local. We were more upset the local didnt come to speak to us themselves.

The RSPCA knew and could see by looking that horse was old and thats why he was lying down more than a youngster(free to run in lovely field if he so wished). That horse lived until he was in late 30s. He lived for many more years after these visits.

We thought it was good the RSPCA came out each time to check our horse and us.

I agree get a report number from the police if you contact them. The police are use to dealing with animals and will know who to refer to if its beyond them ie a snake / reptile etc.

I have only good respect for anyone that works doing this kind of thing. Perhaps you could join and see what its like doing their job.

Well obviously I don't know but if you asked me to guess I would say that on the balance of the evidence they have they feel they canot in law remove the horses at this time .
I have no experiance of working in this field under the new act but it's is sometimes not straight forward to just remove someone's horses.

Reading more of this the police are naughty too? Not my experience of them either. Cold heartless RSPCA and Cold heartless police too.

Can you confirm the pony has starved to death now because the police didnt seize it?

yes but prevention of cruelty to animals is total boll cks !! they will happily wait until they are so bad they need destroying...her words not mine !

The new act was supposed to prevent this being the case however as I said I don't know how it's panning out now they have some case Law .
One of the issues can be that when you deal with this crap all the time you get used to it and then your attitude to it can seem shocking to others .
