I'm with scribbles. I've worked with a couple of RSPCA officers in Somerset and on some pretty horendous estates where the levels of neglect would make your skin crawl. In fact everything crawl. Keeping your lunch from your boots is the first challenge before you can even start to assess the animals. Any occupation has is good and bad staff, but the RSPCA have a wealth of evidence gathering experience, and know what battles they can win and what battles they would just be throwing good money after bad.

You try it for a week - might change your view of the world.
 
It's illegal now, in this country, but not in Ireland I don't think, so some horses go over there for blistering.
It's 'supposed' to help heal injuries, by putting an irritant on the leg and removing healthy tissue, I think the thinking is that the body will lay down healthy cells to repair the damage or something.

Just wanted to say that I have nothing against the rspca or any animal welfair, my comment was based on individual officer that didn't want to examined the cat yesterday, if he did he would have seen what poor condition he was in.

Scribbles - The people I dealt with were NOT volunteers. I volunteer for the RDA so yes I do give up my time and we also help the CPL so YES WE DO GIVE UP OUR TIME!! I am critisising the people that WORK for the RSPCA at the rehoming shelter not the volunteers at all, the poor volunteers do all they can to help it's the people at the top that put the blocks in the way!!

Yep....if you lived on an estate with 17 children on benefits but were home all day you would probably fit their criteria!

Outrageous! Our dogs are left for about 3 hours at a stretch, I pop home at lunchtime and let them out for an hour....if they can be arsed to wake up that is

..they have each other for company, a nice sunny conservatory with open windows and a bowl of water. I'd swap places with them any day

Oh well in that case, I am also friends with someone who is the head coordinator animals control man - basically the guy with the van who drives around, whatever his title is (my head is gone now) from Scarborough N.Yorks, and he can definately be said to be one of the most caring, animal-loving people there is. He works long hours, over time with no extra pay.

It's not fair to lump one and all into the category. As has been shown - WHW were aware of the Stamford horses aswell as RSPCA.

Yes, you may work at the RDA - I bet you don't have to go into drug dens to try remove a dangerous dog used as a fighting weapon, I bet you don't have to literally scrape up tortured carcasses of animals, I bet you don't drive into housing estates to have abuse, beer cans and stones thrown at you because you work to stop animal abuse - taking away puppies that are being tortured so they will become more fierce and dangerous.

As said above - you try doing what the RSPCA do. Other horse charities are just that - ONLY horse charities, the RSPCA isn't perfect, but at least we bloody have it. Under-funded, Over-Stretched, Under staffed - not the heartless cruel animal abuse loving villians people are making them out to be.

For every 'tale of horror' on here, I can name double cases that I have seen and know about where the RSPCA have helped. I don't see how demanding a charity which helps animals be shut down will help anyone?
 
Scribbles - I haven't demanded anyone be shut down! I'm just reporting on what happened to me when I tried to re-home a dog from them and how rude they were to me! It has no relation to anything else, drug dens or anything, just my own personal experience and I am entitled to be annoyed with how they were with me when I tried to help! That's all I said, I haven't even commented on the Stamford case so don't bite my head off!!

No one should donate to the RSPCA unless you want one of there overpaid excuatives to get it... why do i say this .....

once picked up an injured stray dog - hit by car - it had been hiding in our garage unknow to me. We took it to the local RSPCA centre and because i offered to pay they would not treat it. Poor pup - i ended up taking it to a local vet who said its leg need to be amputated and because of how young it was it would be kinder to pts. Phoned em about a herd of horses that were swallowing stones - was told i was a townie and the horses were fine. Phoned them ref a fox cub that was in the middle of a busy road - trying to suttle off its dead mother - was told it will leave eventually - so i phoned the police who did come out but only after i said it was an accident waiting to happen.

They are one of the highest funded charities in this contry. If they put the money where it worked best, maybe they could do more. Less on offices and motors for themselves, more to the actual animals welfare.
 
They are a waste of space - a totally political organisation, who can waste millions of pounds on office buildings and hunting bans.....I have heard on the grapevine that this organisation would like to see pet ownership cease entirely (not sure how true that one is) They need disbanding and more knowlegable, specialist charities should be backed to take their place...
 
Luckily I have only had to call the RSPCA once. It was about a beautiful german shepherd that had been left on its own while the family went on holiday. It was already underweight. When the RSPCA eventually came out they looked through the window of the house it was in and saw there was water so said the dog was fine!
I was livid - it was on its own in a small kitchen with one large bowl of water but that was it - not even a bed. It had to sleep in its own faeces.
This event came just a few weeks after my dog-loving friend had tried to re-home a dog from the RSPCA kennels but her home didn't pass because her fence round her garden was not 6ft high. This is a friend who walks daily and is at home all day - she is retired.
Needless to say I don't have much support for the RSPCA!
And I question what the 'P' stands for? I thought it was supposed to be 'prevention'. It would appear that they have t wait until the cruelty has taken its worse form before they act.

The RSPCA can only go into peoples homes and take away animals with the police present. They do not have the same powers as the police but they like to trick people into believing they do by making their uniforms similar to those of the police. So it's the policeman/woman (who should be there) who takes the risk and keeps the peace.

Charities should operative irrespective of political motivations/feelings.
