I'm new here and thought it might be a good idea to ask about this.

I recently bought myself my first horse and he's absolutely perfect in every way you could think of.
However, the woman I bought him from told me that a while ago she bought a rug that rubbed his mane, about a third of it from his withers up (needless to say she got rid of that rug rather quickly).
It's growing back slowly but surely, but my problem is that the exposed skin is very pink and with the weather being as hot and sunny as it has been I'm worried abotu that area being affected.

I'm currently spraying sun-lotion on it to prevent burning. Do you reckon this a good enough defense against it burning?
I don't really want to put another rug with a neck cover on it in case it irritates that area even more.

Maybe you could get him a fly rug that incorporates a sunblock in the material. That would keep the flies off him too. Is he rubbing the area at all?

He's not rubbing the area at all, in fact he seems to not even notice that section fo his mane is any different.

It's just the worry on my part cause I know pink skin is very prone to burning, I was already putting sunblock on his pink nose before I got him a fly-net with a nose cover.

I'm a bit iffy about putting a rug on him at the moment cause, despite my on-going grooming fest every morning and night, he's still loosing some winter coat and I've heard it can be irritating and too hot for a horse to wear a rug while loosing hair (I'm using fly-spray to combat flies at the moment which seems to be working well)

The mesh ones are very lightweight. I use the nose guards on pink noses too, as I find that the suncream can actually make the skin irritated.

My little man has the same problem. He just came back off loan and his mane has rubbed away at the base. He's a coloured so some of his skin is pink, and I've decided to leave off all rugs with necks for the time being, and slather on tons of sun block. I'm also putting on some aloe gel as even though it's not bothering him unduly and he's not rubbing, the skin looks pretty raw. It's a pity as he had a fabulous mane before, and it's going to take quite a while for it to return. Oh well ......
