Rubbed mane

Well my beautiful arab is looking a bit less lovely as she had rubbed out parts of her mane (despite fly rugs etc). Any recommendations to get it growing over winter? I'll be hunting out silk to sew into her rugs. Also it's currently long, medium and none in places... leave it, trim it, pull it... wwyd?
 
Does the fly rug have a neck cover? Does your mare have sweet itch?

If she doesn't have SI and the rug has a neck cover, then it was probably the neck cover that did it. I never use neck covers/combo rugs with my lot as the choice seems to be neck covers or manes - I chose manes.

She rubbed her neck (under her mane) in spring and kept rubbing it (her mane was the victim). I then put her in a fly rug with a neck to let it heal. Left her without a rug last week and she managed to rub a section raw in a day :-(. She doesn't seem to have SI... perhaps mild if that's possible? She had a lovely mane at the end of winter (with a bit missing from the rug rubbing!). Not sure what I'm sound wrong!
 
If she's rubbing herself raw in a day, I would suspect SI. It would be worth talking to your Vet. I had a friend with a Sec D that had SI and with the correct management, she grew her mane and tail back and hardly ever rubbed. She wore a Boett rug from spring, through the summer, to the autumn. I think it was Benzyl benzoate (sp?) that was applied to rubbed areas.
 
Herbie has sweetitch so I got him a rambo hoddy and then the hoddy rubbed his mane out :( This year I put a lycra hood under the rug and it saved his mane :) I also rub mega-tek mane rebuilder into his mane to help. I've never been a believer in those shampoos but that stuff realy does work. It helped his mane grow back quickly and now it helps keep it strong.
He's a new forest and I want to show him, you can't show an M&M that only has half a mane ;P

Forgot to say this year I started feeding him global Herbs scratch and he's hardly itchy at all now :D
