Rubbed mouth corners

Got a new bit for the pony about 2-3 weeks ago - it's a Neue schule bevel. Previously he was in a borrowed bit which was very similar to the NS bevel except it had a slightly thicker mouthpiece and also the mouthpeice extended at teh end to form "guards" which the loose ring part of the bit slid through. He was fine in the previous bit but his new one it rubbing the corners of his mouth - at present they are just a bit rubbed and not sore.

Any ideas how to stop this? Vaseline? My instructor has checked the fit of the bit and it happy with it and it's the same size as the one he was in previously. he's a Fell pony so has quite a fleshy mouth. Instructor has ridden him a few times whilst I have been away recently and it has continued so I don't think it's purely down to my rubbish hands as hers are very good!
 
B's mouth does this everytime I get a new bit for her, it usually clears up on it's own. I wouldn't put on anything that will soften it before you ride as it rubs worse in my experience.
 
At work we use Preperation H-!!!
I have no idea who found this to work its the most bizzarre thing i've ever heard of- However it works perfectly. It heals soothes, prevents rubbing whilst healing and is far more "stayable" than anything else
 
Our old pony gets this because he pulls so much. We use salt water on him daily when he isn't being ridden to harden the corners more and then he has bit rings on and it seems to work quite well

We tried this on a friends horse but he wouldn't have it anywhere near him!
 
Preparation H is fab for sore mouths but it contravenes dope rules for competition and will result in a failed test!
 
Thanks guys! Glad I'm not the only one. Will have a look at bit guards. Have to admit to having to google Preparation H - as I was typing it in it suddenly clicked what it might be!! Will look into this. Cheers. :)
 
My pony did this, we came to the conclusion that he sucked his bit up into his mouth making 1/2" shorter. The loose ring would then pinch his mouth, so I now have a bit with a fixed rings, sorted it straight away X
