I wonder if anyone has any tips they can give me or suggest any products that might help.

I have a cob with a long mane, during the harsh winter, stupidly, i turned him out in combo rugs with neck. (he does live on the top of hill with no shelter ).

The inevitable happened and his mane rubbed out in patched from the root and has left some areas totally bald. Although some has started growing back there are still some bald areas. So far, I have tried Mega Tek rebuilder, smells lovely and what is growing back looks thick and strong. I have tried MTG- stank to high heaven and didnt agree with his skin. I have also tried washing his mane every 10 days to keep the skin clean.

The other problem that I have is he has pink skin. Fortunately for him we havent had much of a summer so i have put suncream on the bald areas when not too bad, but on very sunny days I have had to put him out with a fly rug with a neck to stop him getting burnt. (tried without but he did come in burnt). I realise on the days he has to have a neck on its not going to help with the mane regrowth, but on the other hand I dont want him getting burnt.

Any ideas?!? :(

I will watch with interest as I could have written your post. I only use normal rugs (no necks) but the bottom half of my coloured's mane is white and it is very thin and the skin is very pink underneath.

I use Megatek but personally I don't think it's making much difference. How often do you apply the Megatek?

I try not to touch the white part of my horses mane i.e. don't brush it and wash it rarely as it is very brittle and breaks and falls out really easily. The top half of his mane and his forelock are black and really thick. I pull the black bits and use a solo comb on the white bits.

I'm watching this too! I put a half neck on my welshie during a winter TWO years ago and she still has a patch half way along which is wispy and short :( She has quite a lot of white growing in her mane there two which is very annoying as she is very dark bay!!!

Needless to say she has worn a normal rug ever since!!!!

I use mega tek around 5 times a week. I have it in a spray bottle mixed with water and apply it when I groom him in the evenings. Also when I wash his mane I use it as a condtioner and am not very thorough when I rinse it out. On the days that it is necessary for him to wear a fly rug I apply mane and tail spray when I turn him out in the morning to give his mane some "slip". The fly rug also has a silky liner where his mane is, hopefully this will limit some damage. He has feed which has biotin in but over the past month I have added biotin to his feed.

I am soooooooooo annoyed with myself for using combo rugs and hope I can fix his mane! x
