Rubber and Horsebox Ramps.....

Some help please.

We have a horse box and are looking to replace the carpet on the ramp with the liquid rubber that you can now buy. My horse slipped going up the ramp the other day (on the bit at the top without the carpet) and ended up falling off the box. Thankfully she only got a very grazed leg and then promptly loaded after(!!) but it did shake me up a bit as you can imagine and has made me think that a rubber surface would be better and hopefully prevent this in the future.

I however know absolutely nothing about this and was wondering if anyone could enlighten me on the following:

• Which is best – rubber cement or straight forward rubber mats.
• Does the rubber paint stuff completely seal the wood? Or will it rot underneath it?
• Will either of these be too heavy for the ramp?
• Any recommended brands?

Any advices very much appreciated!

you can get a rubber mat with the treads moulded in or you could get the thin ramp mating and put your tread bars on or you can get the liquid rubber, all will work, you need to get a rough idea what the different options will weigh otherwise it might make it heavy to lift!! I would try and look at other lorrys to see and ask what people like ... I have the marine grade carpet with alumininum tread bars which seems grippy even when wet, some rubber can be slippy!!! make sure the ramp covering is sound marine ply isnt very good unless its well sealed left to the elements it rots quickly!!! the phenol resin ply is best very strong and lasts even in harsh conditions...

You won't be able to change from carpet over to rubber without adjusting the springs, because it weighs more. I would go for rubber sheets as they are easier to fit compared to liquid rubber alternative

Liquid rubber will just peel of the ramp. Use industrial grade lightweight rubber sheets. You may also need to change the wood on the ramp if it is rotton damaged. (Remember to weigh down the ramp before removing the runbber and wood as otherwise it will act like a mouse trap!
