Dougal currently has a full cheek rubber snaffle for flatwork and also SJ'd in it.

He has a rubber pelham for XC, now he has started pulling and running on after a fence SJing like he does XC so tried him in the pelham SJ and he was good but I did tend to over "check" a bit in it.

He has to have rubber as hates metal in his mouth, any suggestions for a SJ bit or is a pelham the best thing?

He is fine into a fence, infact I have to wake him up a bit, but then tends to pull and lean a bit after the fence and round corners after the fences!

Forgot to say this will obviously all improve with schooling as even our downwards transitions on the flat are a bit "late"!

We almost ploughed into the judge at C yesterday instead of halting at G

He was a very good boy though

I like pelhams, they are not as 'strong' as some other bits. I do not understand what you mean by over check, do you mean you half halt and he completely stops, or he over bends?

I think you should, as you say so yourself, try improving his transitions on the flat before changing bits.

Try lots and lots of up and downwards transitions on the flat and then with little grids and build up from there.

Do you use a mullen mouth and a jointed bit?

If the bit is jointed, horse could be in pain from the joint jabbing him in the mouth and pinching his tongue, it not it is something which can be helped with schooling.

Yes the bit is jointed but I can not find a french link which is rubber anywhere, and he wont accept a metal bit. It is what I tried him in. Dentist said he is also teething so this could also be why he he leaning a bit.

I over check for a deep spot in the pelham, a deep spot that isnt there on a 17hh 5yr old ex racer! We are doing lots of schooling, pole work, jump lessons and we are only jumping diddy stuff.

What's a cartwheel bit? Wehave just obtained a bit from someoen who thought we leant it to them (we didn't) and we're not sure what it is. It has a happy mouth mouth piece?

As for the rubber pelham - have you checked the tightness of the curb? Sometimes just altering this can makea lot of difference. I ahd a pony who was great jumping in a pelham but i couldn't actually have the curb at all as he was too sensitive. Didn't have the choices of bits like we do now though. Have you amybe tried him in a happy mouth style instead as soo many different bits with a happy mouth mouth piece. Maybe a 3 ring gag if you're finding he leans as this helps get the head up (my horse is a leaner)?

Have you thought of a happy mouth pelham, mullen mouth? If your horse leans on your hands, consider a happy mouth gag with a peanut centre.

Gags are good for horses which lean and curbs are good for horses who tend to have their heads in the air.
