Having pinged yet another tooth out of my plastic shavings fork, I thought I'd invest in a metal one. Whilst looking for one I came across a metal fork with rounded ends designed for use on rubber mats, but it was a lot more expensive than a (cheapo) ordinary one. Has anyone used one and is it worth the extra? Thank you :)

Ive got rubber matting and a small metal shavings fork - i find it fine to use and it does not have the rounded ends on it?
Every now and again ill catch it on the mats but only the same as a plastic one and it pings but does not break :)

The metal forks are really heavy to work with, if you are getting so close to the flooring what about using a garden rake - it's what we used to use in the 70's (or a potato fork) before someone was smart and invented the plastic fork.

I use a yard scoop that I got from Robinsons - I hate using a fork and only use one to lift the big bits of poo on top of the bed - then I use my scoop to go through my bedding - its great for mucking out on rubber matting, never catches on anything and makes it super easy to turn the bedding making all the other bits of poo fall to the mat to be scooped up easily :D

Thanks everyone. I use an Equine Speedskip for picking up the majority of the poos, but when I straighten out the bed with a normal fork I sometimes find buried treasure. Was wondering if a shavings fork would be better for this than a normal one, so used the plastic one with previously mentioned dental disaster... Will probably buy whatever is cheapest LOL!

I never use a shavings fork. I use a snow shovel like the ones council workmen use. I roll the bed up the banks and the poo falls down and I scoop it up in the snow shovel. I can also separate the poo from the shavings so easilly by throwing it up and down on the shovel so I don't waste any. I really couldn't work with a shavings fork after all these years.

ahh the potato picking way...................well thats what i use to call it:)

The forks with the metal prongs are fine, no need for the rounded ends. I use a metal one and it has a fibreglass handle making it much lighter and easier to use than the traditional all metal or wooden handled jobs.
