What mats do others use? Are Equimats any good? Can anyone offer some advice? I would want to pay no more than £400 to do a 12 x 10 stable inc delivery.

I use solid rubber mats, unbranded, bought and delivered from our local feed supplier. They were £23.00 per 6' x 4' mat.

They are 18mm thick with circular bobbles on the upper side to provide grip for the horses feet.

I laid them myself on top of a concrete floow and have found them to be absolutely fine. I could not afford the more expensive 'branded' mats but have no complaints with the cheaper ones I've bought which I've had laid for just over 18 months now.

Best additonal advice I can give is to buy some Green Gloop (from Fieldguard) to disinfect the mats from time to time. Easier in the summer when any bedding can be pushed back and the mats dry before nightfall. Superb stuff. Really concentrated and smells lush. Kills all known nasty niffs DEAD!

I would highly recommend Fieldguard:

EITHER the M4 thermal underbed mats OR the M8 -the M4 are a bit more expensive, VERY light - and within your budget. The M8 are even softer and warmer - and cheaper - but heavier (still manageable though.) I have both sorts and they're excellent! And Fieldguard are very helpful and efficient!

Ditto on the Green Gloop - order it at the same time as the mats and save on delivery cost!

We get all stable and lorry matting from a local rubber manufacturer. They do us a good "cash" price.

I bought my mats off ebay - there are a number of stores that have them for about £20 a time for 4ft x 6ft. Mine are 20mm thick and I can't tell the difference between them and the branded ones. They have warn really well and brush up nicely. I use stable zone on them. An Ammonia neutalising absobant powder. I scatter about 1 cup on the floor once a week before laying his bed. When I take the bed up at the end of the week the floor is dry and there is very little smell - he was really wet before I used this.

We have Equimats They are brillaint and the oldest are now 10yrs old!
They are light and easy to move and fit, althouhg ours stay donw unmoved all winter, with a half bed of shavings.

I actually have 6 of them for my 12x12 stable, typo error sorry!

Thanks for the advice so far everyone. She would have a shavings bed that would be lifted every day. The gloop and the powder products were things I hadn't considered.

We have equimats in all our stables, the oldest has been down for about 14yrs - and they are still going strong!

I usually try to pressure wash mine once / twice a year. I wouldn't hesitate to have them again if necessary.

I had Equimats put down three weeks ago in my stable - and I am absolutely thrilled with them.

They are in all the other stables, and have been down for two years, without a mark on them.

I paid £350 for a 10x12 stable.

I have Kraiburg mats as well. 6 for a 12x12 stable. I think I paid around £300 including delivery, but can't remember exactly. They are super mats though.

Am leaning towards equimats just because I've actually seen those in the flesh as it were, two people at the yard have these. They have been there a few years and look good as new whereas other cheaper versions don't look to have worn as well but that could have been how they have been treated since and how they were laid originally. Are the equimats easy to lay first time? I'm so worried my OH will make a big mess of fitting them....if you saw our DIY disaster house you'd know why!

hey Nic - I know a place that sell them a lot cheaper, will deliver and fit them for you and they arent far from your yard - ill PM you the number.
i got all mine off him and they are wearing really well - had my first lot about 9/10 years and they are really good.
youll have to pop down and see the girls and have a look at my mats.

I have Equi-Mats in both of my stables

I really like them because like someone else has said, they are light enough to move on your own

They should be fitted professionaly for you by the supplier.

Well that could be the winner then, the less OH has to do with the laying of them the better. I think he's already ordered them though (I hope he has as he hasn't done anything else in this house today, untidy minx!).

I think Andy has ordered them from equimat however please PM me the other number because a few on the yard are interested in putting down matting. I've just re-read your post and realised yours said fitted too - this is such a bonus. He may be good with computers but he is an absolute disaster when it comes to doing jobs about the house. Another person I know who wants some mats would probably need assistance too as her OH works abroad (and I do NOT want Andy to offer to lay hers....eek dread to think!).
