In my stable i'm currently using straw with no mats, stable has no drainage and a rather dirty boy living in it as well as having an uneven floor! I'm thinking of getting rubber mats put down and using wood pellets but i'm after ideas of what will/won't work :-)

I recently changed to rubber matting and cardboard bedding (one of my horses has mild rao). Other than the initial cost of the mats, have found I need less bedding and easier to muck out.

Prior to that I used to deep litter on a concrete floor with shavings, which also worked well. However my vet advised against deep littering as the ammonia could contribute to my lad's respiratory issues, however clean the top layer.

I haven't tried the wood pellets but understand they can vary in quality, and didn't want to risk them if I bought a dustier brand.
