rubber matting eggbox style on e-bay

1. I am completely unconvinced that would be hard-wearing enough for horses.

2. I have never used the stuff which is permeable, but can only imagine it can stink! I had my mats sealed in with silicone sealant type stuff and they never smelt because nothing got under them to fester!

Can you get them to send you a sample?
 
I brought something like this from EBay, I think they were £10 each then, they lasted for a while but I had to throw them away and I brought the hard mats!

My horse trampled them but he is excitable at feed times and they eventually wore out and had holes in them by the door where he scrapped them, they maybe ok for a horse that doesn't move much!

I will ask to have a sample sent, think it says you can, although not sure how I'd be able to see if its hardwearing or not....

Re the smell, unless you get them sealed ALL rubber mats seem to stink, and I wouldn't get them sealed as I don't own my own stables....at least they seem light enough to lift out monthly to clean, with normal mats I couldn't really.
I know what you mean though, the place I have just left had one person with 2 horses on nothing but mats, the pee used to run out the front of the stables and it stank to high heaven....you couldn't go in the barn for even a minute without you ending up stinking as well!!!
 
HG, how long did they last for, were you using just mats? I would intend to carry on using a full bed as I would without mats, but wonder if it would be worth doing half and half to keep costs down, like these mats at the back under the bed, and heavier ones at the front by the door?
 
Hi, They lasted the winter (just about) but I did it the wrong way round as I had two hard mats at the back and I put these ones at the front, my horse is very messy in his stable, I tried deep bedding over the mats, then got fed up with taking everything out nearly everyday so I just put a thin layer of shavings at the back, but he just treads everything in no matter what is in there - yuck!
He is now on hard rubber matting with a bit of straw (much cheaper) I think he is the dirtest horse in the world!

All I really want is a layer to avoid any scrapes if they go through to the floor, which my mare often does. Neither of them scrape in their stables or stress at the door, and both are fairly lightweight, one is 14.2 and the other is 15.3tb, the 14.2 probably weighs more than the tb....plus they are not stabled every night, only when weather is terrible in winter, atm they are both out 24/7. Just wondering what they were like, as in is it worth spending the money, but not forking out loads, or just spending a bit more for better mats? Obviously the less I spend the better!!
 
One seller of this stuff had some complaints, the sellers responce was to point out that the listing clearly states for small ponies. This seller doesn't say this, but I would bet the same applies.
 
I used some last year, with a full bed (wood pellets) for 3 horse. The youngster bit chunks out of them and threw them round the stable so his were rapidly removed! The two old mares were fine on them and I'm sure the girls appreciated the extra comfort especially at the front of the stable where there's no bed. The mats have worn well and will will be used again this winter. They are very light and easy to move, I didn't find them any more smelly than other mats.

I'm not sure I would use them for minimal bedding, I think they might move around too much.
 
I have it in my wash room and in 3 stables. I have had no issues with it. It is lightweight enough to "peel back" and allow to completely dry underneath. I have a small bed on mine. It won't last forever i'm sure but I have horses from 13.3 - 17.2 on it and so far it hasn't ripped. It is fitted throughout each stable so it can't slip.
