I am looking into purchasing some rubber matting, purely for warmth and to protect legs. I'll still use a full bed I imagine

What sort of flooring is best? The flooring in the stable is mostly concrete, with a little bit of brick down one side.

It slopes a weeny bit, but only enough to drain excess wee away. Is it worth me buyig mats or would I be forever lifting them to clean?
 
With a little slope, mats should be fine. I am a big fan of rubber matting and you can get some really good deals on everything from the basic to the 5* stuff. My horse has the front 6ft of his stable rubber matted and the back 2/3rds deep littered...about 1ft of overlap. It works very well although he is a mucky buqqer! x
 
I love mine, I still use a more or less full bed but I don't have to worry about my rather large mare ending up on concrete anymore as she used to, however many shavings I put in. I haven't ever lifted mine, they have been down for 2 years and don't seem to get wet underneath.
 
I've had rubber matting for a few years now and I think it's brilliant. Still use normal bed though and only need to take mats up a couple of times a year. I've got the 18mm think heavy black ones but if I was buying again I'd buy the lightweight green ones. More expensive but more give in them and much lighter for handling.

I have both stables fully matted with a sort of 2/3 bed. TBH it's worth doing the whole lot. If the stable has a slight slope, great, if there's a hole at the back/front of the stable for it to escap even better as it's nice to give them a swill out every couple of weeks if you can.
 
Rubber Matting is great stuff, I bought mione mainly as my lad used to scuff his hocks on the floor when getting up. The particular make of mat isn't that important, main thing is don't have mats any thinner than 17-18 mm thick otherwise they may split with the action of the horse twisting & turning in the stable.
Providing you have a bit of a fall on your floor to take any urine away it should be fine. We only lift our mats possibly once a year to clean underneath. There is to ammonia smell at all, one of oyur better investments.
You can buy from around £25 per 6' x 4' matt (+ del) & they aren't difficult to fit.

I went for Stablelite which is designed to have no bedding. It is very heavy, very warm and very thick and soft. I have used it since 1997.

I put a small bed about 3 - 4" deep comprised 50 - 50 shaving and dixons chopped straw over the back half of the stable to soak up wee as we don't have great drainage and are in an barn stable so cannot easily wash the floor. No smell and really does the job.

Takes me fraction of the time to muck out that a full bed would do - Cairo is a clydesdale and on a fibre diet with the usual consequence of huge amount of poo.

It is the best ever i have had, you can lift them about on your own, (very light weight) not like some of the others!
The first lot i had back in the 1990 were so heavy you needed two strong men to move them!
I am only 5ft and can move this if needed on my own!
The mats are so soft and springy that you dont have to use much bedding at all if you dont want to.
I would highly reccomend.
 
both my monsters have a full bed on wall to wall matting. I decided to do the whole lot as I would never have to worry about my boy getting onto concrete.

the way I look at it is, that I have my house carpeted so why can't they!
