I'm considering switching from straw to rubber matting & either shavings or wood pellets - although I love straw as a bedding, following a conversation with my YM it seems that it will be in short demand in the S.E this year. We've been quoted up to £40 for bales, when we are currently paying £12!

I've been having a quick look at the choices & I'm pondering if EVA although more expensive, would be a better choice as it's lighter. Is it durable - which is my main concern with it?

Also, what are people currently paying for shavings or wood pellets? It's been years since I last bought any!

With rubber matting, how many do you use a week?

Thanks :D x

I used to use rubber mats then changed to EVA. I have had my mats about 6 years now and I would never go back to rubber as the EVA are so much more user friendly. Also if you aren't planning on using much bedding on top EVA are much easier to lift up to wash away the pee from underneath!!

We have this weekend gone to rubber matting and straw. We currently pay £1.75 a small bale (approx 18 - 20kg) and should use no more than 2 bales a week based on previous yard.

We have 2 on rubber mats with straw, but splashed out on Mayo mats for my latest horse - when we can afford to we will change the other 2 over as they are much lighter, softer and warmer, I don't really think rubber has a huge advantage over bare concrete :(.

The one on Mayo mats is on shavings but I don't use loads, just a thin layer as the mats insulate the floor and are soft enough to lie on. I pay £8.50 for shavings.

I've recently bought EVA rubber matting after being on normal rubber mats for years.
They've Brill, brill brill! I bought them off eBay and although they were expensive at first they save on bedding and they're soft enough for lammy lady to stand on without her feet hurting. Well worth the purchase IMO.

Thanks for your replies - it looks like my Mum wins with her choice of EVA! She thought it would be better, I was just concerned about cost ... but it sounds like it is worth the additional expense :D

Now, decision made, just got to find the supplier in Sussex/Surrey ...!
