I know these type of posts have been done before, but I dont seem to be able to find any.

So I have decided I would like rubber matting in my stable. I just wondered what the best option was? I see loads on ebay but I am a bit worried what the quality would be like. Also I remember people mentioning using cow mats, where would I get those from and are they any good?

I will have a full bed on top of the mats, reason I want them is sometimes baron moves all his bed to the side leaving a big hole in the middle. I think he does it when he gets up because hes big. His bed is quite big and the only way to stop this happening is using deep litter straw (which I havent done at all this year as hes too dirty).

Also need some cheaper mats for the horsebox.

So horse mats? Cow mats? And where is the best place to buy them?

Thanks

I would recommend Equimat - i have it in all my stables and its great. The oldest matting we have is about 14 years old - and still going strong.

A friend of mine brought some of the cheaper matting from ebay, and found that while on first appearnaces it was more squishy, and so she thought it would be more comfortable for the horses, she found that these mats just didn't last the distance and her horse quickly made holes in the matting with his feet - and he didn't have any shoes on! She chucked those mats out and got equi mat within a couple of months.

Kraiburg matting is also very good, but is not as easy to move as equimat, as it is a lot heavier. I know some people have commented that their equimat moves - but this is not something that I have had with any of our equimats. That said I have kraiburg matting in my lorry - and it still looks fab after quite a few years in there and lots of horses jumping up and down on it!!

I gave the Cow matting a try and found it to be much more "porous" than the proper horsey stuff meaning that it absored quite a lot of the wet and was smelly.
It is softer and lighter, so my pony spent the first night ripping it up.

I got my Equimat from my local adtrader £120 for 4 mats! There are always racing yards getting rid of matting, and there's no harm in asking for a sample.

I'd go for Kraiburg if you can afford it. If you go for a cheaper version be sure they aren't slippery. Equimat is also supposed to be good but I think it's even more expensive than Kraiburg!
