if its well draining and airy then I'd say give it a go. Lots of people won't agree with me but I'd much rather it drained away than got soaked up to stay in the stable all night until you can muck it out. You'll probably need to put a lw turnout over your stable rug or just leave the turnout rug on or you'll find that your rugs stink but apart from that it should be fine. I do think that lots of people do beds/rugs/grooming etc because of how they feel and not because of what the horse actually needs. If you end up with a green horse and poo soup on your stable floor then you've only lost one night, it won't kill him and you can put the bedding back in the next day.

I do - mainly because I was totally broke at one point last winter and couldn't afford it

I found the best thing to do was 'slop' it out every other day - I just chucked her water bucket around and swept it out. Smelt fine and both of mine are stinky mares!!

It saves a lot of time mucking out and if you use the dry shavings pellets (don't water them first) it really keeps stable much drier and less smelly. After a while horse learns to wee in the area you put the pellets
