my friends just got rubber matting put down for her horse thats on shavings, she finds that she does not have to use loads of shavings anymore bcos the matting keeps the stable warm and stops her hurting her self on the concrete floor
I would use it for prevention of injury purposes but would still bed down on the top of it(just my choice),however i would also consider it for a very dirty horse so i could minimise bedding for cost efficiency
You'll still need something to absorb pee and poo or the horse will have to lie in it. And most horses don't like to stale on hard ground. I've got rubber mats at the front of the stable, deep litter shavings at the back - they overlap a foot or so. The floor underneath is concrete. Rubber matting at the front means a kinder surface under Sunny's feet while he's up and eating his haylage or just clocking what's going on. But when he wants a pee or poo he goes right to the back of his stable. He takes his naps in the middle bit. Works a treat.
I have mats all round with shavings banks and a sprinkling of shavings on the floor in the middle. I use a bale a fortnight now instead of every 3 days ( my horse is very messy). He lies down more now than he did before I had them, mucking out is quicker, stable has good drainage which I think is important. I would never be without them again - We've had them down for about 5 years now (even moved yards with them) and they've easily repaid their initial cost. Mine are really easy to take out and hose down whilst he's living out in the summer. Good investment and saves time and money!
