I love my rubber matting! I wouldn't be without it now; I see it as economical, providing warmth, softer underfoot and you can be more economical on your bedding when you use mats. They are so cheap these days; you can fit out a stable easily for under £200 and they last for years and years. We have had some down for 10+ years now
I wouldn't be without it too. I've currently only got a field shelter but have put my mats inside and out the front and it's been mud free all year. I was going to move them into my stables when they are built but I like having them in the shelter so will probably end up buying more. They make such a difference.
Rubber matting can be great but it can also cause problems it depends on your stable. If there is no fall in your stable floor & any wee just pools then rubber matting probably wouldn't be any good as it could pool under the matting & smell awful. If there is a fall or slope in your stable then matting is good. We use it with a shavings bed on top & it works well. The matting also protects hocks when they lay down/ get up etc & the matting is softer & warmer for them to stand about on..
I would never be without matting now, the difference it makes to the temp of the floor is huge! Less money spent on shavings and no concern about her kicking her bed up and laying on a deathly cold floor (her choice but my worry). Love them!
Definately cant live without it. I use only a small square of straw for them to pee on so mucking out is so easy and its cheap. Its also brilliant when I leave the doors open so the horses can come and go as they please - concrete can get slippy. I think mats vary hugely though - ours are fitted properly and sealed (we cant remove them) and on a properly sloping flat floor but Ive seen some stabes where mats are just sort of chucked in especially if the floor is eneven! Looks awful and how the horse doesnt trip over them I dont know... Ours have been down about 15 years and still going strong!
another fan, my youngster seems to have a problem with actually laying on the bed! she lies with her body on the concrete and uses the bed as a pillow so matting has been great for her i fear without it we would have had capped hocks
