Hello, Can anyone help?
I'm looking to buy some rubber stable matting to lay on the floor of my 12 x 12ft stables. There are so many to chose from online can anyone advise me who to buy from and what type to get? Having never used these mats before I'm not sure what the benefits are. Has anyone use these mats and are they worth the investment?
Many thanks,
Johnny Winterbottom

if the stable floor has a slight slope so there is drainage then they are worth it on time/cost/effort for mucking out

fieldguard are good and do lots of different types

Yes, I adore my mats. It does depend on which type / make you go for though obviously. I cant remember who I got mine from - they're black with little bobbles on the surface. Like reynold says, you do need a modern type of stable (ie. sloping / flat etc.).

I have them in one of my stables - Im able to leave the door open straight into the paddocks so they also use it as a shelter whenever they like. With the matts, I dont need to put any bedding in at all. I do tend to put a square of shavings in if one is shut in at night though, just for them to pee on. But Ive found all my horses happily lie directly on the matts.

Im actually working out if I can afford to have my other stable done, but its like double size so will be rather pricey.....

I love my mats they are cattle mats so in theory cheaper than the horse ones. They are nice and thick but light enough for me to lift for washing. I still put down a nice thick bed tho

Rubber mats are really good, they make mucking out easier, they are warmer for the horse & there is no concussion to the feet. The make of the mats is not that important but the thickness is, don't buy any that are thinner than about 18mm. Any thinner & there is a chance they will rip with the weight & twisting of the horse on them. You should be able to buy them on line for £25-£27 per mat + delivery. You will need 6 mats for your stable. They are easy but heavy to fit, all you need is a sharp Stanley knife & a steel straight edge.

Buying rubber mats for my stables was one of the best decisions I've ever made. They have dramatically reduced my consumption of bedding, plus my two horses seem to love them. There are a few different types to choose from; but i would suggest the ones with the bobbly surface are best for drainage, cleaning and slip-resistance etc. Don't be tempted to opt for cheap mats, they just won't last as long! I purchased mine from COBA Europe as the delivery charge was so low. Fitting them myself was a doddle too. Definitely worth the investment!

The Equimats are expensive but well well worth it. They are exceptionally hard wearing but really light, even when soaking wet.

they are brilliant and well worth the investment. the thick ones are best, even though they're heavy... no need to lift them once they're down, as the bacteria that make the urine smell can't breed without air, so if you leave them down, they won't smell. a bit of green gloop or other anti-bacterial on top is fine.
i have the very thick foam/rubber ones, which i think are brilliant, but they are about the most expensive.

i had Equimats years ago, but i found that over the years they bent and the jigsaw pieces didn't lock together any more. also, they're thin, so not as warm/insulating as the others.
sorry, can't advise exactly which ones to get.

I have just started using rubber mats, but not over whole stable as very large area, also floor in some areas not level. I have found that they are moving as not fitted exact to walls even though they are 18mm thick! I have to keep heaving them together again, its driving me up the wall. I wish Id never had them now! If you fit them all over I should thnk they will be fine

Thank you all so much for your advise, very helpful indeed. After trawling the internet following up from your leads I eventually bought my mats from Coba Europe ltd (www.cobaeurope.com). They were really helpful when I called them for advice on how to fit the mats and they even sent me a free sample to look at before I bought. Following their advice I bought 6 (17mm) mats for my 12 x 12ft stables, total cost £244.05, and that included the delivery which was only £4.11 !!! That's amazing!!! The delivery was quick too and although the mats were a lot heavier than I expected fitting them was not too much trouble. Most importantly though my horse seems very happy on them. Overall very happy with my new mats and would recommend to anyone.
