are these absolutely necessary? jst bought a new running martingale and it hasnt got one. i guess i could take the one off my old one, but its really hard to get it off as i did it once before.

are these absolutely necessary? .

Yes, for safety and comfort :) Around 40p. I keep several in the tack room and the car (and rein stops) so that I can put them on for people who don't have them when I'm teaching. Like Pat says, warming them up helps, otherwise strong fingers and a boot hook or the hook on a decent coathanger. Hoofpicks tend to pull off and you whack yourself in the eye ;)

cheers guys. i got it off my old martingale this morning, using a hoof pick and keeping it away from my eyes! jst gotta put it onto the new martingale now. a job for tomorrow :0

:D Get two lengths of binder twine and put them through the rubber. Put one of the loops over, say, the top of a door, put your foot in the other loop and press down. Rubber will stretch, you have both hands free and you can easily thread the leather through.

Ladies who regularly attempt to take their eyes out with hoofpicks whilst performing this task might like to take note :D
