went to get a pelham today for tara for xcountry. was planning on getting a normal steel one, but there wasn't any left, so we got a rubber one instead. so, how different are the two? i have only ever ridden a horse in a steel pelham so im just assuming that the rubber one is less harsh- but how much so? thanks x

The rubber ones are sooo thick!! I find that horses find them really chunky in the mouth,so bought a flexi/happy mouth one instead. They are thinner and a little more readily accepted, have you tried it on her yet? TBs have dinky little mouths, and tend to suit thinner mouthpieces.
Ps..ive got a metal pelham doing nothing...

Rubber is less harsh, not a massive diffference relly!

The bigger difference (IMO) is the difference in the bulkiness of a mouth piece, my pony just rears in a rubber one as it doesnt fit in his mouth properlly!

only just bought it so havent tried it yet, giving her a day off today, but going to try it tomorrow in the fields. we only want it for xcountry though!

her old owner hunted her in a pelham, but dont know if it was a rubber, steel or happy mouth. and yes she has a dinky mouth, 5" (Shes 15.2hh!)!
