This weather has been a bit of a nightmare for us.... because of the state of the turnout fields and not being able to use the school my mare has been in more than out of her stable, she has a Mark Todd heavy turnout rug with full neck and because of the recent -10 temp I have kept it on her in her stable, she has rubbed both shoulders of all hair down to her skin (although not to the point of being sore) and her hindend also rubbed away... she has also rubbed down one side of her face and under her chin.... oh my poor girly looks like a neglegted rescue pony.... I have some Camrosa cream but it gets rubbed off because of the rug... I cannot bathe her in these freezing temps and also think her face rubbing may be boredom!! anyone else have this problem????

get a bib for her chest and put sudocreme on twice daily, it will soon heal. you can sudocreme her chin too. Can you fold her neck down a bit so it's not rubbing her and sounds like it's a little long? A few stiches could tack it back. Guess you could also try a lycra hood for her if she'll let you but be aware if she's a sensitive soul or rubbing she might move it over her eyes or it might rug her

thanks Ella19
I have put sudocreme on her but not twice a day I will try again, I just wish I could get her out of the rugs, but she was fully clipped when I got her about 2 mths ago and because of the weather just cannot get the rugs off her! roll on the springtime......

My arab mare gets rub marks on her shoulders every year.no matter what rug she wears. always in the same place aswell. i tried bibs but find they move about when they roll so didnt really help her anyway. worth a try for yours though. i just keep an eye on it and use aloe gel. they never go to the skin though.just take of her top layer of winter coat off. one year when it was really bad. i sew some extra padding/wadding to the inside of her rug under a silky patch of material and that helped alot to.

this might seem really odd but are you sure she's not too hot? Just thinking if she's rubbing round her face, chest and hindquarters it's all places where sweat drips. I'm not saying she's dripping hot but I know if my mare gets hot she gets really itchy! Hence currently she's living out fully clipped in a medium. Just a thought.

If she has been fully clipped two months ago i would asssume that the clip would have grown out. Therefore she may not need a heavyweight rug?

thanks folks, I thought about her being too hot, and think its now mild enough to change her rug to a lighter one,its currently +1 here, her hair is still pretty short where she was clipped (she was clipped right down to her skin then!), the rest of her "unclipped" bits are in lovely condition shiny and smooth, last week the temp was still -5 at the yard when we were there during the day so I felt she needed her heavy rug at night. Sudocremed her face last night (after a bit of a dance!) will see how she's doing today.

My youngster lived out last year and was rugged up, his hair rubbed, i bought a hood thing , helped a bit i worked out evenyually it means, get a larger rug-next size up next time and it wont rub

get her into a better fitting lighter weight (not lighter warmth )rug. tho clipped 2 months ago i would be surprised if she hasnt got a full coat back! get her a silky bib, and wipe the rubs with a bitter alum solution to harden the skin off. you can buy bitter alum crystals from the chemist. mainly used for bed and pressure sores. she obviously does NOT fit the cut of the rug she is in at the moment. best try some different rugs! rambos, fals, and amigos are all a nice cut?

I agree with getting a bib for her but I've tried lots of them and the only ones that have really worked are Bossys bibs. They are very thin so wash and dry quickly which is a bonus.
