My mare who has an autoimmune disorder has spent many months (possibly years) being itchy. At the moment she is almost impossible to keep standing properly in the yard as all she wants to do is scratch. She isn't actually itchy now as the steroids have it all under control but it has developed into a habit.

I have to take her back to the vets at newmarket in the next couple of weeks. last time i took her (when she was still itchy) she scratched and scratched all the way there and back. i think she is likely to do the same this time and i really dont want her to do the sort of damage to herself that she did last time. Does any one have any suggestions to either stop her or protect her?

Im sure i saw like a bum guard for sale a few years back but now cant find it and now am not sure that i didnt just imagine it. Does anyone have such a thing if so where can i get one?

Not sure about a bum guard, Shires might do one, but I have a possible alternative that might be cheaper. When my lad travelled with a partition he used to lean on the bars and get rubbed, so I taped an old tail guard onto one as padding and used a pair of tights on the other (as I didn't have anything else suitable). It really helped for me, so might be an idea if you can't find a bum guard.

What is she scratching against? Can you pad it out? You can buy foam from places like Dunelm mill (if you have one of these close?!) and pad things out with it maybe?

I use this on my horse as he rubs his bum in the trailer. But, I think if you use it on its own, it will slip down. I use mine with a Kitt Tail Protector and surcingle. The tail protector has a detachable strap that velcros to the top of the tail guard and has a loop on the other end to pass a surcingle through. Its a bit of a contraption, but it works :D

Hopefully this link works to the tail protector....

ps i think I brought my 'bum guard' from Robinsons, no long ago.

We've a pony that tries to rub his tail, so we put a tail bandage on, then a bumguard over the top, and it's as though the bum guard moves over the tail bandage = tail bandage is intact when we get there and the tail is fine.

I think I might have a go at making something. We are going on Monday now so not much time to get anything plus they are a bit small think she really needs something to cover her quarters
