I am so sorry for you. I lost my homebred yearling last week to intestinal tumours so I know exactly what you're going through.
Although I'm doing is remembering what an awesome life she had, albeit far too short. You did the right thing for him.
Why do we do this again ? I'm sure it's meant to be fun. They think probably the move to his winter grazing was enough to set a dormant tumour off. Having looked into it, it seems change in pasture / routine can trigger them off. We were only saying how well the 5 boys looked when we moved them 5 weeks ago.
