After our exciting Tweseldown adventure the other week, i've decided we need to make it a bit more second nature and boring, not to kill the enthusiasm, because that's great, but so that we don't have to give everything such a violent reaction! So since then we've been on 'Bravery Boot Camp' we've been doing lots of poles, little grids, little bounces, cantering around the school in 2point and hacking on our own, in fact i haven't picked my dressage saddle up for nearly 2 weeks :O

So today we met up with Mark Corbett again at Tweseldown, sitting in the Lorry we weren't hopeful for a dry afternoon, but as we tacked up the rain cleared and off we went! The ground was understandably pretty wet but pretty good, and it defiantly didn't look like they'd had 100's of horses round the hunter Trial last week, so props to the team!

Warmed up nicely again and even nailed a little flying change, some thing else we've been introducing as and when it feels appropriate, and headed for the first fence a little roof top thing . . . It didn't start out that great with a major over jump/ twist which nearly had me eating dirt, but luckily, I managed to save myself £17 and hung on despite no stirrups or reins!

eventually settled over this and a log pile;

So we moved onto the next, a little hanging log, jumped that both ways happy enough, not too many amateur dramatics and then jumped a little gappy roll top a few times too!

Had a little play in the water . . . Ruby now loves the water and trots straight in and out without a problem pointing her toes like a little fairy!

We then moved onto our little friend, the blue boat, which caused so much chaos last time out!!

we had a little run out first time, i didn't ride as forward as i should have done and just let her slip out the side, so i turned her round, pulled up my socks and kicked on. . . Well she went over! And i almost ended up eating dirt, Again!

If i only took one thing away with me today, its when i think she's going to do a huge jump, i grip with my knees because it feels like a safe place to be, but i actually just need to stick my seatbelt on, anchor my heels down and sit it out . . . i also need to look up too . . . but that is the same for all my riding exploits, still a work in progress! We jumped it a couple more times from each direction and she was great, still not daring to get anywhere near it but she's also not pissing off after it which is a major achievement!

Then there was a couple of houses;

And then the heavens absolutely opened, the rain came from every direction, i swear it was even jumping back off the ground! We were now back at the start of the hunter trial and a little decorated house at 1, which she jumped really well, apparently it caused a few problems on HT day so i was glad she jumped it so nicely and then straight onto a little hanging log at 2 which again she jumped much more reservedly!

She was so wonderful and the rain was so horrific we called it a day, but before that we were allowed for a splash through the new water complex, it has a really cool little run up/ ramp which was fun!

Eventually the rain stopped, and we headed home and at some point my heart returned to a regular rhythm and then we had a lovely Easter roast dinner but i'm not touching an easter chocolate as i now really nee to get back to the gym and zap that under-bodyprotector-bulge that seems to have crept up on me!

I also wanted to say a massive thank you to everyones lovely comments on my last post, its a huge boost knowing that although the pictures can be a bit horrifying, we are just at the beginning of a huge journey and everything is a work in progress!

Well she's certainly got scope! Lovely horse looks like your going to have lots of fun together :)

Oh wow I love your position, I'd never be able to stay on with those huge leaps, you should be so proud of yourself, you're giving her so much confidence. Obviously going out in the pouring rain is good for Ruby, she definitely looks like she's settling towards the end.

Looks and sounds like you are learning what not to do and what to Do! She has a great pop in her, I would be tempted to go back to smaller simple jumps and try and give her more head going over the jumps, let your reins slip a bit as she takes off, have fun...

Scope is probably the one thing i don't have to worry about this horse! She's just got so much power its insane!

Ruby doesn't actually like to rain, perhaps she just thought she'd best behave so she could go in? She tried to jump the wheelbarrow back into the stable this morning whilst tied up outside because it started raining!

Thanks Micky, these are the small jumps! The reins is something we are working towards but its something we are going to have to break down slowly, she's much more confident with a strong contact, like a hand holding. Mark and I have discussed and he's happy i'm not jabbing her which is the main thing, the matter is complicated further by the fact that often when she over jumps she scares her self and then pisses off, so i have to account for that eventuality as well! Its definitely fun though!

Well she's certainly got potential :D.

You might find it easier to stop pinching with knees if you hoick your stirrups up a bit? Just a suggestion but it made a world of difference to me with a horse that used to jump with the same enthusiasm as yours ;).

Yes i thought the same! going to hoik them up for sure next time!

Love Ruby! She's certainly got a jump on her! Having had a big jumper the best advice I was ever given was to look up, pick a spot in the distance above the fence and then it automatically helps your body to move correctly and allow for the big jump. It also looks like you really need to give with your hands more even when she jumps normally, if she's able to use her head and neck to bascule more then it will also make it easier to sit to. Really hope you don't mind me commenting, I'm definitely a person in a glass house and all of that!!

No of course, and i completely agree! the only issue is I'm never sure until we are half way there whether its going to be a normal jump or a rocket propelled launch! its always in the forethought of my mind though! Yes the point thing really does help, i just need to do it more often!

Wow, she is a lovely horse. And my goodness, can she jump! I'm so envious of your sticky seat- how on earth to you manage to sit that out?

My friend had one that would over-jump massively and unseat her. Funnily enough, it was only over smaller fences and once she put them up, he'd settle and focus.

What's she like over poles? Or free-jumping?

Wow, she really doesn't want to touch the jump does she! Lovely pics and sounds a very productive outing :)
Rain looks horrible!

Love your photos again. They do make me smile as I scroll down seeing her enormous leaps. Well sat.

They do make me laugh, we were in hysterics in the lorry on the way home at some of the photos i haven't dared post!

She's getting better over poles, and i haven't free jumped her myself, her previous owners did though and she's quite spectacular! i think she may be similar and settle over bigger ones, but i'm just working on her looking at what she's jumping and doing with her feet rather than just launching over whatever it is, we'll get there though she's learning quickly!

Bless she doesn't want to touch those does she!!

Once you get the measure of one another you'll be a force to be reckoned with!!

Thats very kind, time will tell!

Rain was horrendous, but so worth it!

I think her competitive name should be Miss Suspicious. Well sat, she is a young persons ride.

Thats a good one, she doesn't have a 'proper' name at the moment!

Wow, she is beautiful and what a jump! I'm so envious of how you sit these, I have an over jumping mare and I just can't bring myself to even try these days, my back is not up for it, she sees five bar gates at a small cross pole.

Just a pondering I am going to throw out there (definitely not a crit!) I understand what you mean about hand holding, I am just wondering whether you could do that in a slightly different manner, either using the neckstrap or a headcollar with some reins and whether that might encourage her to release a bit more?

I always have hold of my neck strap so confident I'm not socking her, but in the mean time its all trial and error to see what works for us both, but I'm confident we are moving the the right direction i just have a real long way to go to catch up with her awesomeness!

truthfully she's killed me back, its been bad all year but yesterday really set it off! been dosing the ibuprofen all day!

She's lovely, love her tidy knees

Thanks!

Wow! Dad is indeed gorgeous.

You must be so excited about her LP. She's just born to jump, isn't she.

Yes so excited about her, but she is also such a lovely person to have at home!

We had no idea what we were getting with her, i couldn't find an older more experienced horse in my budget so contacted a friend about a couple of youngsters i knew she had, so we drove a 400 mile round trip on a few photos - she was barely backed and very wobbly but she was kind with a lovely attitude so we agreed to have her, then they sent us her passport details and we realised what we had . . . and i am grateful everyday that my friend held on until we could view her!

No money would get me on that horse lol. Well done sticking on. Does she do that SJ too?

I haven't taken her out SJ'ing properly yet, but we've hired SJ's at a local school and shes not so bad, fairly normal.

She hasn't always been this 'expressive' XC either, last year she'd put a couple of big ones in, but they were generally normal jumps, it just seems to be this year, shes a lot stronger all over and not quite sure what to do with all the power!
