On the HHO website i've just read that Ruby Walsh has had to have an operation to remove his ruptured spleen. Now this is what happened to me 8 years ago. It says that he will be back racing in 3 weeks!!! I was back on a horse within 3 weeks but i wouldn't have been able to race, i was swollen and weak. I was in hospital for 2 weeks. So how can he be back in 3 weeks? Maybe that's private health care for you.
 
No I think that might be a jockey with wishful thinking. Paul Carberry was off for nearer 6 months after his spleen was removed & nobody could ever accuse him of being a wimp.

I personally would be very surprised if Ruby is back in action this year. But I would like to be proved wrong. Jockeys are pretty amazing how quickly they can come back. How many of us 'normal' folk would like to race riding within 2-3 weeks of breaking a collar bone & the jockeys do this regularly.
 
True, they are amazing, and they do get back in the saddle before most other horse sport people. But with this operation i lost over 1/2 stone and i wasn't allowed to eat for almost the 2 weeks that i was in hospital. I know they like to keep there weight down but surely he would be too weak.

Jockey's do seem to have the unbelievable power to heal amazingly quickly! I suppose it is their living

. It's part of your immune (sp) system, so you need antibioxics/pelicillin (sp) tablet once a day for the rest of your life and flu jap once a year, just have to watch for any infection.

I've got a nice scar all the way down my stomach to my belly button, hence it was very swollen and sore for a few weeks.
 
No you don't need your spleen, it helps with immunity but you can survive fine without it, but I'd guess he'll be on antibiotics for a fair while to prevent infection.

I think 3 weeks may be a bit optimistic, but I suppose he has to at least try to get back for master minded - if not I reckon he'll be back for Kauto, even if he's not at his best.
 
You do need your spleen. My niece was kicked in the stomach as a 7 year old and had most of it removed, the surgeon hoped enough of it would grow back so she wouldn't have to take tablets for the rest of her life.

It guards against infections, which can kill you very quickly if you don't have a spleen.

Having said that - good luck Ruby, hope he soon recovers so we can see his lovely smile again when he wins.
