Rude comments about your horse

I usually get it the other way around tbh and it's probably just as mildly irritating. I can see the flaws in my horses so I would have no problem with someone mentioning them. But they don't and I usually have to point them out to people. Either way, it wouldn't bother me if people were to say the faults they see as I see them too.

It's one thing pointing out flaws (Too much white, canon bones too short, swayed back, etc...) but to be downright rude and horrid is another thing entirely. Someone once said to me that Ned was the ugliest horse they'd seen and another said he should be put out of his misery, because of the unusual way he was moving around the jumping course (a pacer struggling with canter and "normal" trot)

Monty has blue eyes so people do comment about him but it tends to be along the lines of "Ooh, he's got blue eyes!" rather than anything nasty.

Then we went past a dog walker the other week who said "Errr, isn't your horse weird looking?" in tones of vague disgust. Some people are just rude. I wouldn't have dreamed of walking up to him and said "Oh wow, your dog is ugly!"

Yep, been there and heard them all!

I will be honest, my old boy could be a really pain in the *ss if he woke up on the wrong side of his bed. He just needed handling properly, I once over heard a delightful woman on my livery yard say as she was walking past his stable with her two horses that he was 'going to kick him in his face' it maybe did not go down well when i popped up from nowhere and offered her a kick in the face in return. Vile woman. He was just a grumpy old so and so who spend most of his life being pulled around the sales, I would be grumpy too. He turned out to be a lovely horse who stood like a lamb for the farrier and vet and would happily plod around the yard after me.

Most Brits probably aren't used to seeing STBs though. There's tons of them over here, so most people here don't have to be particularly rude about them, they just say 'it's a standardbred' and that says it all :smile3:

I think Ned has the loveliest expression.

I had so much pressure to have Stormy pts when she was ill. According to pretty much everyone on the livery yard, she "wasn't worth any money" and was "too small to be any use competing" and I shouldn't waste money treating her when I could buy a new one.

My appy got "please could you warm up somewhere else, your spots are upsetting our horses,' "you could fix that horse with some paint" and "don't you feel silly riding a cow-pony?"

That's true! I get loads of people asking what on earth he is! "Is it some sort of weird TB?"

Our neighbouring farmer told me he could get a lot of burgers off my boy - I took it as a compliment as he has beef and obviously values animals by their weight ;). I'm still counting myself lucky he didn't say the same about me. He did also, however, refer to him as a "proper hoss".

We are rude about each others' horses on our yard - I frequently refer to my friend's horse as B the barsteward - and we take the mick out of the owners of the mares when they won't be caught where as the boys are always happy to come and see whether we've got anything in our pockets. The important thing is that there is absolutely no malice and everyone treats everyone else's horse just as well as if it were their own.

I took my boy (chunky Welsh D) to his first ever jumping evening and just took him clear round. He hadn't been jumping long so we trotted round very slow but cleared it all with minimal fuss (some very artistic leaps over fillers though!)

On my way out in front of everyone, a spectator shouted 'Should have stuck with him just pulling a plough instead of jumping, eh?!' and laughed, not in a nice way.

I felt like crying :( Rude!

I've had 'she's just a cob' said in a very unpleasant sneery way when I mentioned that limit of my ambition was to get to BE90 (pony may be just a cob, but she also jumps 1.20 when the mood takes her).

Also had 'YOU want to go XC schooling?! On MADDY? *snort*' from the same person. Incidentally, said person would like to event but can't get one of her horses to jump without rearing or tanking off and can't get the other to do anything!

I generally ignore everything she says these days.

After the manager at my old yard decided to very unsuitably pair up my mare (who is quite grumpy and just wants to be left alone) with a very needy 4 year old who would not leave her alone, which culminated with the 4 year old getting kicked, I got told that my horse was 'dangerous, a liability and not worth the hassle of looking after'. She ended her tirade by saying "I pity you having a horse like that". Needless to say I moved yards shortly afterwards.

The first horse I had on loan was a lovely boy, 15.1 traditional cob with a wall eye but he was gorgeous to me and the best attitude I could have wished for. I also worked at a local RS. A lady came up one day enquiring about grass livery locally, and told me she had just been to a yard around the corner and seen the most ugly pink faced wall eyed 'thing' in the field. Her face drained when I told her he was mine!!

Some of the comments about my boy when he was entire have been cutting (and some from people on here). He was a lovely placid, loving stallion who I had to get gelded to keep other people happy not because he needed it :(

Well, people do comment on her stubborn personality and inability to carry out simple requests, they used to constantly tell me how to ride so I don't really mind, most of what they say is true but she's getting better all the time so I don't really care!

(Of same horse) What you brought that for? I bet he's absolutely full of cancer and he'll just cost you money, he'll just die anyway.

Yeah...

Some people have an eye for a horse and some don't - we know which kind you are ;)

Stunning slumdog, good for you that showed em!!

I once had a PC instructor refuse to come near my pony as she said he looked evil and nasty because he had blue eyes (he was Cremello NF), he was the kindest, sweetest pony in the world, it really upset me!!

Mary King said about my old horse 'There are thousands of easy horses out there, it's up to you if you spend time on a difficult one'.

Two years later I finally accepted she was right (who'd have thought, all those gold medals and she knows her stuff!) and replaced him with The Pony who gets nothing but compliments!

I am more offended if someone says something mean about my dog lol!! But honestly in one ear and out the other. I was told my old boy was a half dead donkey (context I could only ride a half dead donkey) But I loved that half dead donkey and most people couldn't ride one side of him as he was a monkey. Been told my current horse should be put down because he is dangerous, but as he is only dangerous in certain situations and I can manage him its noone elses business. Both my horses do what I want and thats all that matters to me :)

Don't think I've met anyone brave enough to be rude about my horse. :o

This!

Had some people slate my husband's horse at a show, he's not a show animal, he's a heavy cob who is a fab hunter and hack....but hates doing anything that resembles work. Decided to take him to a show for a bit of fun last year and my son said the people outside the ring he was standing next to were pulling him AND me to bits. :p

Never happens when I hear it.....and they wouldn't have gotten far if OH has heard it too!

I just told my son to let it go over his head!

Quite a few years ago a comment at a show caused me to EXPLODE and since then nothing was ever said, wonder why?? :p It was a comment about my horses jumping ability, said person never took their horses to shows so my comment back (with a few choice words) was along the lines of 'when you are here with your horses, then come back and talk to me again, I might listen!'..

:D

My temper is short, a random bus driver the other day even annoyed me.... :p

I tend not to get rude comments about mine. Or if they are rude, its gone completely over my head. I get the comments about 'oh its an arab' when I take my mare jumping, but all the people at most of the places go actually like her and are surprised by her attitude. I like to think of it as positively conditioning the equine community towards arabs!!

I had a bit of a moment the other week, when some people came round to view the property where my lot live. The woman came onto the yard and asked about hacking. I said it was fine for me, as my horses were safe on the roads. She looked Alf and Lola up and down, and said "Mine are a bit different - they're quality competition horses".

At that point, I may have accidentally mentioned Alfs 226 BD points, and Lolas sterling record at Intermediate BE. Childish point scoring? Moi?

I think the worst I had was from an instructor...'he doesnt look like a £300 cob now'...I was fuming, what does it matter what the horse costs! Hasten to add, didnt have her again!

~titters!~

I never have proper nasty comments to my face or that i've heard because everyone loves my Fern. :) Friend did say something jokey which i got a bit peed off with which was when i asked if she's go xc schooling with me because Fern has never been with me and she said that she wasn't going until i got some brakes as she wasn't going to wait for me to get bombed into a field and come back. -.- I mean we have brakes they are just not always oiled and working when needed.

My reply is usually down the lines of, He wasnt born with knackered legs thats from hard work, you on the other hand are ugly and will remain ugly. Yes i know he is fat but can go on diet, you on the other hand are ugly which wont change without surgery. No wonder there is so much upset in this world when people cant think first before opening their mouths

I want someone to insult my horse now so I can use this haha!
