Rude motorists!

I went out for a hack today that involved going over a bridge above the motorway.

As I approached the bridge there were no cars so I moved to the middle of the road to feel safer considering it was the second time that my boy had been over it alone and it's pretty damn high!

As soon as we got onto the bridge a convertible pulled up behind us and positioned himself to overtake despite us being on top of the motorway and in the middle of the road. I moved over to block his path as there was no chance that i could let him overtake as it wasn't safe.

He crawled up my horses's bum so my horse decides to stop dead..making me nervous due to location and that he rears when scared..luckily though he just did a big poo in the driver's path which they then had to drive through.

I love my boy! :D


Has anyone got any similar stories?
 
I love it when horses do things like that!!

I was hacking my old pony out one day and we went passed some teenagers on push bikes and they were messing around then one of them started to ride his bike right up close to my horses back end and although it didnt worry my pony at all i couldnt say that he wouldnt kick (i was once told your pony has got 2 back legs and knows how to use them!) so i stopped my pony and turned round and said yes i know my pony has got a fat a*s* but you cant park your bike!! he went as red as a beeteroot and went back to his little friends with his head down as they all laughed at!!
 
I stable my horse really close to an agricultural college so you would think the motorist driving on the country roads around there would be very considerate of horse riders. Nope. Out hacking today we had many cars going past us far too fast. I've started riding two abreast and only moving into single file when the car has slowed right down behind us because they cant overtake. The road is very bendy too but motorists still overtake when they cant see far ahead.
 
I'm lucky as the roads are quite quiet so if anyone tries being annoying I'll just walk in the middle of the road and refuse to move.

My hack yesterday was worse though;

I was hacking in the opposite direction and had to walk past a car and trailer with horse inside bashing about. My boy started to get worked up so I was trying to calm him down whilst about to walk past.

All of a sudden a car drives past us, stops and has a conversation with the driver of the trailer and i'm left there with a horse wanting to tank off in the opposite direction.

I couldn't believe the driver. So rude!
 
I was out hacking today and was heading home along a country road. A car came up behind and I expected them to slow down, instead they just flew straight past us with no care at all. Luckily my horse is a saint but they don't know that. I can't stand how inconsiderate and just dangerous people can be.
 
Outstanding :) Brilliant pony!! haha yes, a guy crawled up behind us, before beeping his horn to tell us to hurry up as it was a very narrow country lane! Of course, just my luck, my horse absolutely shot off! :( I just don't get why motorists cant understand how dangerous it is!! xx
 
He did get an extra carrot for it!

I find that if I hack through the village you'll have 2/10 cars slow down. The rest tend to drop gears/rev as they pass us. One car startled my boy going over a pothole quite fast.

I would love to have a taser gun for those that believe that they are above the rest of us.

That would be very very useful I think ;) and so true, half the drivers around think it's okay to just drop a gear!! And a carrot? He deserved a medal :D xx
 
I gave him some pizza crust too so think a carrot was the healthier option haha.

Either the taser gun or dumping a skip of poo on their driveway so they can't get out.

I'm lucky too though as there's no off roading vehicles in our selection of hacking so I shouldn't really complain about 2 mins of drivers haha!
 
I was out driving on Saturday morning and came across two horse riders hacking along on the pavement, despite the fact that it was quite early, and the road was quiet with hardly any traffic, but the pavement fairly busy. I figured that since the rules of the road clearly did not apply to them, the usual courtesies didn't apply to me either and only slowed down marginally to get past. If you aren't a considerate rider, why do you expect drivers to be any better?

Obviously I'm not saying that all horse riders are like this but its not only drivers who are inconsiderate.
 
i was out with a friend a couple of days ago, i was doing babysitting duties as she was on a horse that hasnt been out on the road much, i heard a car coming up behind us so i waved him by as the road was clear, he then proceeded to stop behind me so i waved him on again and he went into the back of my horse, then he pulled round us and overtook us on a blind bend and roared off into the distance, im so glad my boy is super safe in traffic

I agree with you. I think there should be consideration on both sides but in the instance that I initially used - safety has to come first. I was first on the bridge so I was going to be first off it whether the other driver liked it or not. This being based on me only having had my boy 9 weeks so he's still settling in and can be nervous hence why I felt it was the safest thing to do.

I always wear hi-viz, helmet and usually my body protector so i'm not a horse riding hooligan haha!

While I would agree that some riders are inconsiderate and give the rest of us a bad name, I always slow down out of repect for the horse. Its not their fault their rider is a pratt.

My yard goes out onto a busy A road and we have permission to ride on the footpath at the side as it simply wouldn't be safe to have horses on the road. I do give way to joggers, cyclists etc though.
 
I always slow down & respect the horse & rider, BUT, most of the horse & riders do NOT respect the drivers! I've found that the majority just ride along as if you're not even there, let alone thankyou for slowing down,which is probably why a lot of drivers dont give a damn!
 
Was the driver rude or just not understanding the reasons for you riding in the position you did? After all they're not mind readers. And if they have no experience of horses may have felt it safe for you to overtake. All it takes is a look at the driver, a clear hand signal asking them to wait, and a big thankyou when and a wave on when you are happy for them to pass.

The driver of the car probably had a similar conversation about rude horse riders.....

That's a shame. I find its the minority of riders who ignore drivers and most people I come across do acknowledge their thanks with a wave of a nod.
 
Yes the driver knew that I had acknowledged him and when asked to stop he ignored me.

I'd have thought that common sense would have prevailed though considering it was clear I was walking above a busy motorway!
