rug advice needed

i am getting a stable rug for my girl and was looking for advice. budget is an issue - I have about £70 to spend. we live in the mountains and she is fully clipped so i need something heavy for her. therse are the rugs available in her size through clearance.

options are Mark todd ultimate stable rug standard - 600 denier outer with 400 denier filling
Weatherbeeta belmont - standard or full neck 420 D outer with 360 filling
weatherbeeta windsor - 420 outer and 400 filling
Dominick sport stable 350 standard- 1000 d outer with 350 filling
Masta - heavy contoured rug full neck and standard - don't know outer but 340g filling
Masta regal full neck - 420 D outer with 425g filling

sorry about this its just i don't want her to be cold but i am not sure about what brands are good etc. She has a couple of weatherbeeta rugs at the mo and the fit is good.

Any advice or if anyone has views pro or con on any of these, that would be much appreciated.

An old quilt is good for chucking on under a stable rug - pull it up the neck and fold it back over the top of the rug and it should stay

As for the above rugs - I think all of them are pretty good, just personal preference really
 
iv got the mark todd under rug combo, which is lovely, 250g i think, and have been using it in conjuncture with the amigo LW, 150g, so making a 400g stable rug, with neck.
it allows much more flexibility.
my friend has the weatherbeeta belmont combo, and loves it

mark todds are good for big shouldered horses i think aswell. just in case that is an issue for you!
 
I've always found Masta rugs really good and mine has lasted years. I'd probably go for the Masta Full neck with 425g filling but i have a wimpy TB, depends on what type of horse you have and how much of a good doer she is, you might be able to get away with a lighter weight that 425g
 
Why not get a really good turnout rug - something that is 1200 denier outer shell and around 340g upwards filling. She can stay in that then in and out????

I think that most brands are pretty good to be honest - it's just down to personal preference, and what fits your horse well.
 
I have had the Masta Regal for 8 years and it has to be the best rug I have bought. It goes quite high up the neck and fits my boy perfectly. I have stuggled to find rugs that suit, as he has such big shoulders, but Masta fit as they have a deep shoulder vent and are also deep rugs, so dont stop half way down his belly!
 
Thanks for all the replies! My mare is a really typical IDxTB hunter type but where she got the size of the ID, she has the skin and coat of a TB so she really feels the cold. She is not the best of do-ers.

I had the loan of rugs for last year though so hence having to buy them this year. I have already got her a turnout (weatherbeeta) and i am really happy with the fit etc. I have a lightweight masta stable at the mo - good fit as well but too light for these frosty nights! Moved her to new yard yesterday and they had to loan me rugs for her last night

not the best first impressions!

Amymay the new yard have asked that i get separate stable and turnout rugs for her, (i am not going to complain since the livery is an absolute bargin at £50 a week for everything!) so I have to get her comfy PJs for night-time.

thanks for that. Masta regal is edging a head! not sure if she needs a full neck - she is totally clipped out though so probably!

What an odd request - if my horse were a poor doer then I would not want them to use up valuable energy warming up a new, cold rug every morning/evening (depending on when you ride!).....however, as you say it is a bargain for livery so i suppose no point in questioning that.
 
If it helps sway things my boys is a pure ID, but he is a bit of a wetty! Fully clipped out the Regal isn't enough. It does for Oct/Nove but for the coldest months he needs a heavier one. I bought him the Masta full neck HW (stretchy neck one) last winter which does the job all through the winter.
 
That is a strange request, ususually most livery yards like the horse to wear a turnout in the stable so they don't have to change rugs!! Rug wise I always use Horseware. Just a thought, if you're on a budget and already have a lightweight stable rug how about just getting a full neck underrug to put under it?

I know, but who am I to argue with that deal on the livery! Oh yeah and they clip for free, free storage for the trailer, and for an extra £15 they will school her as well! Free holding for farrier, back man, dentist etc. and they will organise everything as well. My girl is NOT cheap to feed at all and with the price of straw/bedding this year as well, I can't believe my luck. Its also much closer to home, and is great hacking and people to hack out with.
I think its worth putting up with the odd request. they said they prefer to put them to bed in their pyjamas.

They are involved with the local drag hunt and have offered to babysit me if I want to hunt my girl (she is only 4) also offering to bring me on test runs to get her used to ditches etc. they are part of the local RC as well and are starting up a dessage league! no indoor but they have a flood lit all weather and there are only about 5 people that ride there so there is never a problem getting into excercise. I can't help feeling this is too good to be true! I am so excited about it!
 
In that case buy an under-rug and request that it stays on under both her TO and stable rugs? It will be cheaper, you can layer so it is more versatile and in the long run she is better off as you don't change rugs in quite the same way...plus layers are warmer than thick rugs.

Weatherbeeta do a nice cheap one - you could get two in case one gets wet/muddy/dirty?

Otherwise if your budget stretches to it I would go for a thermatex - ultra warm, ultra wicking, can be used on their own or as under rugs and they last forever - wash well in a household washing machine and tumbledry nicely too (says you're not meant to but i do mine on a low heat!). Before I got him my horse used to winter out in a shell and thermatex underneath. And no, I don't work for them!!
 
Like Fimbleina I've got a purebred ID whose a wimp where the cold's concerned. When he's hunterclipped no single rug is enough if the weather is really cold & I pile layer upon layer on him.

My advice would be to get a good full neck heavyweight but also get a middleweight for warmer nights & also some old duvets to layer between the two for when the weather is really cold.
 
thank for that. i have the middleweight stable so i think what i will do it get a heavy weight full neck for the mo and that combined with the middle weight should see us through till christmas, when the really cold weather comes in the new year, i can get an under rug and that should cover all combinations - unless I have missed some combiination that should keep her going. ...... hopefully!!!!
