Hello
This is my 1st winter with my pony and as he gets worked for and hour every night i have been told he will need a blanket clip... he is a welsh sec b and is 13.2 hands.
Does anyone know what sort of stable rug he will need...?
Also as he is stabled through the whole winter i was wondering, when i take him out for a walk to allow him to stretch his legs will i need to swap this rug for a turnout rug?

Would be very grateful for any advice

Hi, I have a 13.1h mare - probably some mix of native breeding.

With regards to the clip you do, and as such the rugs you need depends on how sweaty he gets - We only ever fully clip my girl because we have to sedate her to clip and lines take too much time!!!

As shes a cold little soul, and a bit older now (17 yrs), she wears her rugs layered up. Your chap will hopefully be a bit hardier, and a good MW rug, with a blanket clip would be OK for now. I'd get something else to layer up, or something heavier for when its really cold though.

As for changing the rug for a walk - I'd put a TO on if its raining, but not if not.

Hi Jasmine,

if your pony is of the hairy native type, you probably won't to rug him too much even if he has a blanket clip. A light weight or middle weight stable rug should be sufficient and you might want a cooler or fleece type rug a wicks for after exercise.

If you hand walk him to let him have a leg stretch you could simply take his stable rug off (unless it's really freezing) as he should be war, enough if he walks briskly.
