Looking for advice re rugs for travelling in may. I have a fleece cooler rug but it is quite heavy. It was perfect in the winter but I am wondering about using it in may for riding camp. My mare sweats a lot n the box - she isn't the best traveller and I am thinking that it might be too heavy as a traqvel rug. what do you think? I know its hard to comment not knowing the type I am talking about but its a heavy fleece type cooler/travel rug. any advice appreciated.

Thanks

What about a cotton waffle type cooler or just a summer sheet if your horse gets hot.

In the high summer some of my horses travel without rugs. So long as your partitions are in good condition and sufficiently well padded then if your horse gets hot whilst travelling then leave the rug off. Remember that if your horse is sweaty after competition then use a cooler rug to avoid a chill. Bear in mind the journey home will require a rug as the end of the day will be cooler and your horse will be tired and you don't want her muscles getting cold on the way home.

I always have a good supply of sheets, fleeces, thermotex rugs and rain sheets with me when I go out just in case the weather turns.

What about a thin non-fleece one. Like a Masta cooler. I used to have one of those for a horse that sweated a lot. It was cooler than a fleece.

Sometimes mine travel without rugs too if its warm enough, although I usually chuck on a cotton summer sheet mainly to keep them clean.

Have you opened all the windows possible?

I've got a TB who sweats up travelling. I use a Coolmasta rug in the summer and in the past I have used a summer sheet with the front quartered up under a roller. In the winter I used a thicker knitted type cooler.

I have different weights of coolers.

Thermatex
Fleece
Towling

Each is used according to needs and temperature.

Thanks for those replies. I was on line shopping when I posted! I hope the new rug I got will be light enough for her. Its a long journey so there will be lots of stops so she will be checked on regularly.

ta!

What about a thermatex if he,s cool it,ll keep him warm if he sweats it,ll breath
and allow him to cool!!!!
