as the title says really! Lily came with some rugs but her turnout rug practically comes down to her knees, and is quite low on her chest, plus i’d like one with a neck since she only wears it to keep her clean/dry. she’s not your typical tabletop welsh either, but obviously she’s still a bit of a chunk!

her stable rug is a shires tempest, but i’ve never had one of their turnouts so i don’t know if they’re any good!

Anything horseware is the best fit on my connie with big shoulders. Amigo for most of them (turnout and stable) and I invested in a rhino for his heavy winter rug. Really good quality - my last Amigo 200g lasted 10 years before I replaced it. I also have a Gallop 100g which fits ok. Not as good quality but was a fraction of the price so I expected that.

Totally agree with @Love - I only buy Horseware rugs and some of mine are 25 years old and still going strong

I've used them on everything from 12hh to 16.2hh and none of them have ever rubbed with most of the horses having welsh blood in them somewhere.

Yes they age and get less fluffy and/or less waterproof but they still go on and don't seem to tear as much. In my experience you can buy cheaper but it ends up being a false economy in the long term.

Love Derby house rugs
Amazing value and good quality which are on sale currently 👀
I got a liner compatible turnout rug with 1680 denier for like 70 euro with a neck!
bargain
I love purple too
You can get a cheap middle weight rug off them for like €40 and they’re good
Saved my bum when I’m buying for 3 😂

I recommend Shires or WeatherBeeta - they don’t seem to be as deep as other brands.
i tried Derby House on my Welsh D but it swamped him.

Also I had one shire tempest turnout and it leaked I’ll never go back

Mine are big chunky horses so need the depth of a Premier Equine rug (which also fit well round their wide shoulders) but they might be too long on a Sec D. I have one Gallop rug which is a good fit on the shoulders but a fair bit shorter so I'd say they would be worth a try.

Welsh X hackney wide but with wither- Shires or weatherbeeta. Never found horseware rugs fit her well had to sell them all. I've used both brands on her since 2010 and not had leaks. Current rugs are all about 5-7yrs old. 0g and 50g are Shires. 220g and 300g are weatherbeeta. Lives out.

thankyou everyone!! i’m going to have a nosey at the sales, i told myself the weatherbeeta giraffe rug is a waste of money because the poor giraffes will get covered in mud anyway, but if it’s a good fit i might just have to!😂

i was thinking horseware originally for the durability, but her and her field pals are all very civilised so i don’t think she’ll rip it, and our winter turnout is limited so she won’t be spending huge amounts of time in it so i’m not sure if i can part with that much cash🙈 if she hadn’t already been rugged all winter i’d just let her play out naked so i think from next winter she only needs it for the worst of the worst weather!

I have a narrower D - chunky but not tabletop and has a bit of shape across his withers.

He lives in his PE - they're the best I've found for him. Amigo also work well fit-wise but don't stand up to the rug rippers in our field.

Brands that haven't worked over the years:
Masta - gaped around his neck
Whitaker - gaped and waterproof on a summers day only
Rhinegold - not shaped for a peachy bum

Weatherbeeta fit nicely but only had full necks on mine so unsure if they had the gaping issue.

this is interesting! i’ve heard good things about PE stable rugs but that the turnouts weight a ton when wet x
