Rug Destroying Horse Help!!!

Our new horse is turning out to be a nightmare when it come to his rugs he is constantly playing with them in the paddock and chewing them and pulling the straps off the front he even takes the front in his teeth and shakes it another horse in the field and then he to grabs it, i have allready gone through 5 rugs so far this winter and cannot keep buying new ones cause by the time they have finished there is very little left at the front to repair.

I was wondering if any one else experiancing the same problem had come up with a solution i did wonder about spraying the rug at the front with something that didn't taste nice but was harmless?

Any suggestions welcome???

I have exactly the same problem with mine but he isnt ripping his own, he attacks his field mates rugs!
So I used some crib-stop type spray on the rugs, worked a treat, and harmless to them!

I have a rug destroyer too, i'm on my 4th this year with her, haven't found anything yet that stops her as its not through teeth or rough play but there are loads of trees in my field and she stands under them and has a good old scratch, so the rips are sometimes the full length of the rug depending which tree she has chosen that day.

I use fishing line to stitch mine up and believe me my sewing is horrendous but I refuse to buy her any more rugs.

I has a friend whose horse used to bite others rugs, he put chilli paste on them and it soon stopped !

Good luck its no fun keep replacing rugs.

Just thought I would bump this up for a friend, the cribox spray worked for a day until the boys decided that it was too much fun abseloutley destroying rugs and started chewing it again (I will get a pic of the 1 week old rug and post it tomorrow, you wouldnt belive how they destroy them, he eventually damages them so much he will strip right out of them!!). She darent try chilli paste as with two young children she worries they may touch the rug and then put it in their mouth or eyes, or she might have some on her and get it on them etc - so is there any other ideas (other than sewing their mouths shut!!)??

P.S. Tried seperating them, the bigger one just jumps the fence

Just a thought and you will know better but is there a chance your horse is too hot? I have known a horse that if she was over rugged she would destroy them to get out of them and cool down.

My horse will destroy anything that isn't Rambo or Fall. I have a snob horse
