Rug for a Veteran

Hi there, I have a 21 year old welsh section c X and need to get him a rug for the coming months. He currently has 2 heavyweight rugs and obviously gets far too hot in these so I was wondering would it be better to A. get a 100mg turnout, or B. get a lightweight with no filling? Id probably rather get the one with filling, but am worried he will get hot.

How about looking for a rug that has no filling but can have a liner put inside it - best of both worlds

The only rug I would consider for this time of year would be a fly rug, or at the very most a sheet with no fill.

I have sheets for if they have been bathed ready for a show, or it turns very wet.

Even a sheet will cause overheating on nice days- would you walk around in a waterproof jacket on a sunny day?

It would really be only for nights when its raining heavily and down to 4 or 5 degrees, definitely will be avoiding it for the day! I thought if he was a young horse I would just go for the lightweight but seeing as hes so old, maybe a filling would be a bit snugger for him?
If I bought a lightweight and went for an under-rug, can you use fleece rugs or do you need to buy special ones?

I used an Amigo on my ancient pony, he just needed a bit of help as you say on cold/wet summer nights.

He didn't overheat. It was very light and 100g is nothing, it is not very deep either so really just a 'light thing' to chuck on when needed. He was a very robust pony in his youth and I never imagined rugging a horse in summer, but he just couldn't take the rain or a chill wind when he got to very very old.

I have a 100g Loveson rug which was under £50 and is probably the most used of all my rugs, its invaluable for those days and nights where you arent really sure what the weather is going to do, the pony was in it in the heavy rain and wind last week
