I would like some advice on rugging please. I have a 23 year old ID x TB mare; she has always lived out all year round; in recent years she has required careful feeding to keep her weight up over winter but has done fairly well. She is not clipped, has a field shelter and can come into the cattle shed if it gets very nasty.

As she is not getting any younger I have been wondering if I should get her some extra layers. I have only ever had hairy native breeds and therefore never had cause to purchase a rug before!

so I would like to know if
a) you think a rug is needed
b) what type of rug would you recommend - what should I be looking for/avoiding.

Thank you

Get her a Rambo. A Duo would work really well as you're able to adjust how warm she needs to be without buying multiple rugs due to its layering system.

I would get an older gal a bit of extra comfort personally.

I disagree with Amymay I have found rambo bad fits on our selection of ID/TB's

I wont buy / avoid Rambo at all costs
weatherbeeta can fit ok as a cheaper alternative

Fal or loveson -

IDXTB have big chest (a lot do) Rambo were useless for my late mare much too tight.

I suggest you ask friends who have a similar horse or a variety of rugs to try on to see which is best.

What I like about Fal/lovelson are the rugs are light weight - warm and deep.

I have a set of rhinos for my id x tb....I like the clip fastening at the front, good depth around the body...no mini skirt look, and stay put well on the horse! I do find they can be a slight on the small side so think about going a size up just to give a little extra room.

Yes I'll concede that the Duo isn't deep enough for some horses. And it's not a rug I'd buy myself again. But what it does offer is a multi layer system which, in this case, would be perfect.

But if you're prepared to pay - by a good LW with a 100g fill and then a heavier weight rug at 250g plus for when it is really winter.

Thanks guys, I am off to look at rugs today! I think I have been putting it off due to my lack of rug knowledge and fear of getting the wrong one! Guilt has got the better of me now though. :)

Let us know how you get on! - rug shopping is one of my favourite past-times. :biggrin3:
I won't advise on fit as none of our horses have broad chests, which IDxTB's usually do - so I probably wouldn't recommend the right make for her! However I would avoid Masta rugs as in my experience have found that they fall apart very quickly. Brands like Horseware, Fal, Premier Equine etc are all very good.

I'll go against the grain and say she may need less rugging as she gets older. Many older horses develop pre-cushings and grow the most ridiculous wooly mammoth coat. Our old girl went naked as she got older as she started to overheat and get itchy.

I've just bought an amigo bravo plus 250 fill which is a great fit on my big warmblood. It has the horseware liner system and the liners are easy clean! It's a good fit and quite deep. Which I great as mine will be out 24/7 too. I have bought the 100fill liner so far but they do thicker fills too. I have had masta (crap in my opinion) weatherbeater (lovely rugs but don't fit him well, too tight across chest and don't sit right around neck) now I know amigo fits him well. I'll start to get a collection going :-)
