Rug liner system - the way to go?

Help me decide!
15.3h cob - usually clipped out over winter, stabled at night.
We have multiple rugs, various weights/thicknesses, he is a sweaty boy and has a really greasy coat, his rugs tend to feel awful on the inside after a few wears.

Seriously considering doing away with them all (including stable rugs) and getting the PE liner system - the ability to wash the liners at home is really appealing.

Anybody else use them? Pros/cons? It's a big outlay but i feel the quality is good and hoping the convenience is a winner too?!
 
Yes all the way to liners, but I use them in my Rambo rugs. The Horseware and PE liners are interchangeable.

I change the liners regularly, at least weekly. They wash well and dry very quickly. Much, much healthier for the horse to have clean fresh liners on.

My outers are between 0g and 100g fill, I never use them without a liner of at least 50g.
 
Yes absolutely. I have the horseware ones. I think you get 100g, 200g and 300g. All you need is a decent outer shell, swish liners will fit with horseware too. It’s great to know if they’re wet you can just change the liner and stick it in the wash and your horse has a fresh one. I also use them under other rugs that don’t have the liner neck fastenings but I’ve never had an issue with them slipping.
 
I think it would suit you if your horse is a bit grimy because as said above they are so easy to wash and keep clean.
I personally use a back ward liner system
😂 I’m a bit pushed for time some mornings but always want to take a layer off during the day so just layer another turnout over top.
One of my horses can only have combo rugs so they don’t work for him.
I have liners but not really sure I used them last winter. Maybe I will with Alfie, new horse this year though.
 
I love liners, they were a complete game changer for me. I use any brand liner with any rug as I just use the clips at the back rather than attaching them at the shoulders. I find that the shoulder attachments are a bit fiddly and make it all less easy. The most important thing is to get a really good outer turnout so that it's waterproof.
 
Oh definitely you can buy lots of liners and pop one in the wash whatever you need to. That’s what I do!

I didn’t bother with PE as they are so expensive! I’ve got a Swish rug and liners and also have a shires highlander with liners for the other horse. All of them fit the horsewear liners which are always for sale second hand which saves some pennies too! I couldn’t justify £400!
 
I also use Swish rugs and liners, have a 50g turnout, 100g liner and then a 200g turnout for each pony, so I can have 50g, 150g, 200g and 300g combinations. I also love that they have detachable necks. Mine are unclipped at the moment and are nice and cosy in their 50g rugs with no neck.

Yep I have a 100g swish and liners up to 400g but if I could buy again I’d get a 50g as it’s more versatile. I’ve got a 0g in another brand which we use and abuse over the autumn/spring x
 
I love the liners I've got shires, Derby house and swish and they fit in ally my turnouts I mainly use weatherbeeta and shires rugs.

I use the snuggy petticoats as well for when it's not that cold or to keep the liner cleaner as they dry so quickly you can wash them and put them back on in about an hour.
 
I've used liners for years. It does depend which make of rug fits your horse best but I now use Swish, highly recommend. I used to use Horsewear but they just didn't quite fit my horse

I have 2 Rambo optimo outers (a back up Premier Equine 50gm) and 50, 100, 200, 300, 400gm liners. Plus air cooler max 50gm liner.

Think it’s great. Was them when getting greasy and wash well in normal machine & dry super fast.

See I don’t find cotton sheet fits / sits as well, has straps, buckles, seams etc.

Rambo liners are light, soft, silky, antibacterial, breathable, soft edges, no straps, no buckles, clip in front and back. I find Rambo liners light years better than cotton sheets.

Do think the petticoat would restrict a big shouldered horse? Can’t quite picture it?

I adjust everything to fit. My heavy duty sewing machine has paid for itself many times over.
I use a cotton sheet to stop the inside of the turnouts getting greasy.
For liners I usually make my own. They clip to the back D rings and have loops for the turnout front fastenings to slot through.

Ah this is interesting - I reckon to have priced up the swish and got to a similar figure (as I do have one of their normal rugs and fab) - will take another look just in case I was doing it wrong 😀

I don't know they are quite roomy but mine are Arab's and although they are not fine in build they are only 15h and 15.3, I use a 6' and a 6,3 and they fit really well for mine had them a few years and have been fine.

They are really good at Snuggy if you email them with a question they are so helpful.

I will take a few pictures of mine tomorrow for you so you can get a better look.

I just got the swish new and bought second hand horsewear liners, was a lot cheaper!
 
I run two outers at a time so I can easily switch between a heavier and a lighter weight of rug twice daily if needed, without faffing about changing the liners. That’s no different to having two different weights of rug without liners, except with liners you can keep changing and washing the inner.

One’s a 0g Rambo Supreme with detachable 0g neck, the other’s a 100g Rambo Duo with a 100g detachable neck.

I have no problem with the liners slipping back, but I always use the Velcro fastenings at the neck as well as clipping in at the back.

The PE liners have twin front breast straps rather than just the one for Horseware liners, so the fit is slightly different, which is something to consider. Horseware don’t do a 50g fill liner but PE do, which is how I ended up with the PE 50g liners - I use the 50gs lots.

Fleeces etc pull back as under rugs, any underug needs be made from non stretch material.

You could try but they generally don’t have belly straps and might slip. It probably wouldn't save the staff much time either because they would have to detach the liner from the rug at night and reattach it in the morning. By the time they’ve done that it would be quicker just to change rugs.

I have left them on but I put a stable rug over the top or they could get filthy if they lay in crap, so kind of defeats the object of having a clean layer under a turnout, quite often it will be a fleece or a thin quilt if I don't want the turnout left on.
 
I went for the liner option last winter thinking it would be cheaper and easier but agree it’s a faff and he snapped his chest strap which made me realise the obvious - if outer rug is damaged then you haven’t got another rug. Personally wouldn’t go for liners again but if your pony is very greasy a liner/cotton sheet might be useful, I just wouldn’t get rid of all the rugs!
