Rug liner system - the way to go?

I went for the liner option last winter thinking it would be cheaper and easier but agree it’s a faff and he snapped his chest strap which made me realise the obvious - if outer rug is damaged then you haven’t got another rug. Personally wouldn’t go for liners again but if your pony is very greasy a liner/cotton sheet might be useful, I just wouldn’t get rid of all the rugs!
You obviously need spares of whatever system you use.

If you have 3-4 different weights of rugs I still think you’d end up with insides dirty & greasy over winter. I was all my liners regularly.

But you wouldn't just have just one rug!

I am a terror, have a 100g turnout, a 200g and a 400g, and two liners. We switch it up so the horses have slightly different fittings twice a day. I always changer rugs every 12 hours, better for pressure points.

I don't find it a faff as I'll only out liners in and out every couple of weeks.

I have posh rugs but won't wash them, as the waterproofing goes ineffective. I've had Rambo ones that have still been 100% waterproof after 20 years! I hose the mud off whilst they are still wearing them, and never use them in the stable. I used to sponge the insides every spring but find the liners are much better as I can wash them lots without affecting the waterproof layer of the rug.

Personally I once bought a very expensive liner type system (Rambo) and turned out the outer waterproof layer simply wasnt waterproof enough, it leaked like a sieve so the quality was not there. Personally I just pop on a stable rug underneath their turnout if its exceptionally cold/wet. If I wanted to wash the under layer regularly I think Id probably just get a basic cotton sheet with the shiny material underneath, it would easily fit in the washing machine and would be a much cheaper option. The issue with the liner system is the main outer shell could get broken, then what... I have about 5 rugs that I rotate all winter so theres always one drying and in case a clip breaks off or they tear it then Ive got backups.

I buy different weight rugs as well but tend to nit go over 100g.

I don't wash mine either I brush mud off and re proof with fabsil gold.

Ah this is interesting - I reckon to have priced up the swish and got to a similar figure (as I do have one of their normal rugs and fab) - will take another look just in case I was doing it wrong 😀

If you go to the bottom of the page there are bulk-buy discount codes for buying multiple rugs/liners. 🙂

I have a mix of PE and swish turnout rugs for my lot. They have two turnouts each and 2 liners. Colour-coded by size to make things easier (burgundy 7’3, green 7’0 etc…)

I wonder if you had a faulty one?
I have a summer series with a 100g luner across the back and that stays waterproof. My rambo duo has been used for downpours, all winter for 2 or 3 years and is still waterproof.
With regards the main outer - once mine is wrecked/no longer waterproof I'll buy another although I suspect the rug will outlast the pony.
The only thing I don't like is the fillet string - the plastic clips break and I've had 3 before I gave up. The pony now has baler twine for a fillet string.

I'll see how the amigo holds up with the young pony.

I'm a bit of a blanket hoarder myself 🙈

The liner system is really practical. I always like to have at least two outer blankets with a "one to wear, one to air/dry out" mindset. Also because like to swap the blankets out so they aren't wearing the same thing for too long. It's so easy to wash the liners and have them be good as new the next day.

In recent winters, I really have only ever used 200g at most on my unclipped TB. I have a 0g and 100g outer blanket that are in my usual rotation and then use liners as needed.

I bought both my boys the Lemieux rugs at YHL and have added the liners. I can't believe i didn't do it before. I am selling the 17 rugs i no longer need 😂. I bought them a no fill each and my old boy the 200g and my younger one the 350g and then a 100 and 200g liner each. The rugs fit so well, even my Iberian with his huge shoulders and neck, all come with removable hoods. Seems so much better for the horse, I do also have the snuggy silky bodies on them both so i never put a cold rug on them.
