cant believe these last 2 weeks, both my mares have injured themselves in exactly the same way, both right hind legs aswell!! 1 got her leg stuck right through her belly strap so that the strap was above her hock and it has rubbed it raw,the other got her foot stuck in belly strap and rubbed raw underneath her fetlock,my question is why dont rug manufactureres make rugs with safety in mind, you would think there would be a safe breaking point!! the metal on the clasps have stretched but all stitching in tact......sorry for the rant, but i have heard several horror stories off people this week about injuries caused by rugs....

Have seen this happen time and time again, which is why ALL my straps are that tight you have to pull to do them up!Never had a hoof caught yet as no room for him to get it in :)

ETA...If the belly straps are baggy I wont leave him unattended in it...(fleece coolers etc) When trying turnout rugs and stable rugs it is a huge factor for me that straps can be done up tightly,If they cant it goes back!

But where do you draw the line? The rugs would fall apart the whole time if there were 'breaking points'.

If you do the belly straps up tight enough, they won't get their legs caught in them. None of mine ever have.

can understand what your saying, but my straps were not baggy!!! ok there was a tiny little bit of give in them as i thought when they roll they will strangle themselves...lol but now mine are done up really tight now,was even thinking of putting tiny bit of twine between hook and fastener so it would snap easily if god forbid it was to happen again.

Was going to say use twine, maybe only half the thickness of bailing twine though, as i find that although easy to snap with enough sharp force (eg in a rear back or sharp pull) the pressure of a caught leg may not be enough to break a full thickness piece.

Enough people moan about rugs being too weak and easy to break, i think that it has become a challenge for rugs to be made as strong as possible.

Tbh If you tighten them so that you have to pull them to do them up they wont get hoof caught :D My friend used to loosen mine when she had to change his rug when I wasnt there, she promptly got a *******ing, lol,I do it for a reason and it works :) x
