Being paranoid about my horses rugs getting stolen I was thinking about painting my postcode on them in large letters with emulsion paint so that if someone does decide to nick them they won't get nice rugs or find it so easy to sell them. Has anybody tried this or are there better paints to use? I was thinking that emulsion is a pig to wash out.

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

My rugs sport a range - one is kitchen paint, a couple of others were outdoor paint and the most recent ones are spray-on for cars. (No renovations on at that time).
With the spray-on I made a stencil from cardboard, with the others I drew the shapes and painted them in.

So far they've stood up to everything horse, weather and even washing machine, have thrown at them.

Others have had their rugs taken, mine were around but were ignored...

Thanks for the reply - I hadn't thought of kitchen and bathroom paint. I have just finished painting the kitchen and bought a load of pink paint which I hated when I started using it so its going spare....... It would show up very nicely on dark rugs!

I have used enamel paint and it really stands the test of time. Emulsion paint will wash out in no time.It will reduce the risk of your rugs being stolen, but not remove the risk entirely. Someone down here will steal rugs no matter how they are marked.

I didn't know people down here stole rugs :s

I've just coated in pink kitchen and bathroom. I can always re do it if it wears out - my clothes haven't come clean since I did the painting yet! At least if someone around here uses it I will see it - its the size of one side of the rug in very rich pink

In broad daylight too. Cornwall is not the safe secure area people seem to think it is. We have had rugs taken off our horses backs. The field next to ours had two rugs taken off the horses backs between 11.45am and noon.

I would think that if you are going to steal a rug during the day would be safest as it doesn't look as suspicious as doing it at night- providing the owner etc doesn't see you of course
