Went out to give Eeejit his bedtime pear and put his rug on. Accepted pear with pleasure and rug with nippy ill-grace, then looked sour and alternated pulling out my coat with turning and plucking at the rug. So....off it came, at which point he stalked off looking satisfied.

He'll prob bei cold overnight, but they really can tell you what they want if you listen!

Not such an eeejit then !
My last mare would always let me know when she wanted to wear a rug too, by turning her head away or towards the rug. She also didn't bother reading the weather forecasts because she knew better what the weather was going to do. If she wanted her rug off because she knew it wouldn't rain, she'd refuse to go into the field and if she didn't have a rug on, when she knew it would rain , she'd turn back to her stable for me to rug her.
My current gelding is such a sweet, compliant boy that he just goes along with whatever I decide, bless him.

Its really warm here tonight. Obviously geographically based by SE England we won't drop below a real feel of 12 / 13 all night.

Mine haven't been rugged for weeks except for one night last week when it was torrential rain.
An unclipped horse doesn't really need a rug in dry weather unless it's below freezing.

Holy moly - that’s warm?! It’s a longtime since I lived in UK, so clearly I’ve forgotten what cold is. In Sydney last night overnight low as 13. Had to have fire on as I consider that cold.

tHa! One of my lot will remove his rug in many many pieces if he doesnt want it on, so I make sure to go with his wishes. He said a firm no last week, and regretted it bitterly, as it rained heavily overnight - he suddenly changed his mind about wearing a rug!
Mine are all naked again - long may it last!
