Rug options for a wet horse

I'd pop the 50g on, for peace of mind if nothing else.
I've used rugs on unclipped wet horses before and there wasn't any problem (not repeatedly but as a one off when caught out).
I have also popped a cooler then rug on top and half an hour to a few hours later came back, removed the cooler and horse was good and fully dry in their rug.
Yes I've done both these and both worked just fine.

OP mine is unclipped and hairy and when he was younger I didn't rug only to have rainscald to deal with so over the years I have rugged in wet and windy weather and prolonged wet weather. If it's warmish and raining but not windy I use a 0g and in wet and windy and cooler conditions I use the 100g. Having personally experienced the difference with my 0g versus filled raincoats!

If it’s any comfort my 20yr old mare who is primarily warmblood and TB lives out unrugged and as long as she has food to eat she is fine. Having said that, she does have access to shelter (I would count woods as a sort of shelter though, depending on how dense etc). I understand why you are second-guessing yourself but if she doesn’t actually appear cold and isn’t under weight or losing weight then I would be inclined to leave her as she is. Just adding this opinion in case it’s of comfort ☺️

Thank you for all the replies guys ❤️ I think I’ll throw a rug on her just the 50g one to keep her dry more than anything until the minus temperatures are over at least! As it’s the rain and the wind that’s making me think she could get cold
If she was using the trees for shelter more I wouldn’t be as worried but she always seems to be soaked!

i’d throw the cooler on and hang about a bit if you can then swap it for the 50g, although i don’t know wether you’d be able to manage long enough in the cooler before it starts raining again.

failing that, pony pamper parlour and stick a hair dryer on her? *joking everyone*

I could try that! But doubt she would want to stay still long Enough for it to work and it would definitely get caught in something? it’s just back from being repaired ?
I have a strange feeling she would attempt to eat it!! Tries to eat my phone on the daily ??‍♀️?

In my opinion a 50g rug is better than a zero fill. She is used to no rug so I think if it drops to what we have been getting stick it on her, it won’t do any harm. I would usually say all those trees close together usually shelter and keep you warm but shes not been going in ?
Haha yes she’s being difficult! But really I understand why she wouldn’t want to as I imagine it’s scary to walk in the woods alone due to visibility but home check done and contract signed so hopefully mocha be on track soon!

Weirdly already ditched me!! Even without a companion she seems to like this field! She fence walks when she wants out and stands at the gate but she literally only comes up to eat her mash and then walks away back to the grass ? 0 shits about me but she’s definitely still happier with a friend
I don’t think Barry will be back until it’s bone dry ? poor sensitive boy

Ran up today in a brief dry spell to rug her and found her cozy in the trees for the first time! So decided not to rug due to the dangers of her getting stuck on a branch and that she has amazing shelter now she feels comfortable going in there
By the tracks today was her first day in this spot and it clears out nicely to allow her to lie down in there too ? much happier! She now using her shelter

Is it a new field to her @Katie&Judy ? Maybe she's been watching it the last few days to make sure no monsters live there.
Very new! Which is why I understood her unwillingness and very happy she has decided it’s acceptable! Was hoping her companion would’ve been here by now but transport is proving to be a bit of a pain (mocha is 5 hours away) but soon!

Given the photos of the fencing I would be wary of rugging due to the risk of entanglement.

Oh for goodness sake, as long as the rug fits and the straps aren't hanging loose then there's not much chance of a horse getting tangled up in fencing. I've had horses on livery yards for over 40 years and never known it happen. Maybe we shouldn't turn out in the wet in case they slip? Shouldn't turn out in the wind in case it spooks them? Clearly ice and snow are a no, but should we avoid sunny days in case of sunburn or them getting hurt because flies bother them?

What’s her condition like? Do you think she’s dropping weight/condition more than usual for this time of year? If yes, pop the 50g on when it’s due to be wet. If no, carry on as she is now ? give us an update when your newbie arrives!
