Hi! I’ve recently taken on a 16.3 TB (full loan).
Im wondering if he has enough rugs or do I need to buy more?
He currently has 2 fleeces, 2 light weights, a medium, a heavy turnout and a stable rug. Is it worth getting a light, medium and heavy stable rug?
It’s my first horse to myself , I loaned for ten years previously but got told what to put on.

that should be plenty, I always layer rugs on top of each other when cold so you have lots of ways of varying the warmth, having a fleece or lightweight stable underneath is also a good idea as they can go in your own washing machine once a week so you keep a nice clean rug next to their skin.
Also just because it’s a turnout doesn’t mean they can’t wear it inside! Popping a no fill over stable rugs is great for stopping poo and wee soaking through when they have a lie down.
If you don’t have a rug drier and they come in with wet rugs, just put a dry layer underneath then the wet rug on top, they’re still nice and comfy and body heat will dry it much faster than anything else ?

turnouts and they stay in those most of the time. Saves money on the washing , and keeps horse warm and less labour.

I have an under rug to go under any of them but I refuse to layer up my horses with more than 2 rugs, and weigh them down, so it is 2 rugs only, more freedom to move and less weight to carry around. Personally I hate fleeces, as they slide back and get tight round the shoulders, so I have zero fleeces.

Exactly this! Layering is definitely the way to go. Take it from a rug hoarder with one in every weight who now has far too many & needs to sell! lol
