Why-oh-why do lightweight rugs all come in pathetically flimsy deniers? I still want the rug to be waterproof in summer, and my horses are still just as thuggish in summer! My youngster’s 2 month old 1200 D mediumweight rug now has a whopping great tear in it, so it looks like I need at least 1600 D for all my rugs. Can I find a rainsheet with more than 1200 D in a decent make? Can I hell!

Bah. Tempted to sell up and buy hairy natives.

But here's a thought - has anyone bought a heavyweight rug in a high denier and pulled all the wadding out to make a rainsheet? An annoyingly expensive way of doing it, but no more expensive than buying new rugs every 2 months!
 
I've not gone out to buy heavyweights to rip the innards out to convert to lightweight but after my old Welsh boy started the job on his I completed it to give him a new lightweight:D
 
Hmmm... I may do it intentionally! My collection of dead Rambos, Fal and Bucas lightweights is rather depressing - it ends here!
 
Not bought intentionally to do it, but I have an old (about 15yrs) Robinsons mw I chopped the ancient fleece lining from to make a lw. Wouldn't say its as light as a rainsheet though. If you plan to do that, eBay would be a cheaper option than new.
 
Are your trashed rugs polyester or nylon? Last year I finally invested in a Rambo supreme rain sheet, best thing I've done in years. If they can trash ballistic nylon I think you'll be hard pressed to find anything else :eek:
 
I can't help on the high denier lw front - but a solution might be finding a small manufacturer on ebay and asking if they can make one for you? Also, you can get cheap high denier mw/hw on ebay for around £40 that you wouldn't feel guilty about ripping the lining out of. :-)
 
Not sure about all of them, milliepops, but some are definitely ballistic nylon :(. But I had a 450g shires rug that was 2000 denier, which has survived unscathed. Though this may be because it's rarely cold enough to use it :rolleyes:. My Premier Equine buster trio (1650 d ballistic nylon, I think) is still mostly in one piece... a few small holes and missing a tail flap, but pretty waterproof still. May get some more of the Trio outer shells and de-stuff them. Can always put liners underneath to make a warmer rug.

I don't know how they do it! I never SEE them at it. Stealthy ******s.

Ideally I wanted one that can be used as a rain sheet in summer, so 100g would be too heavy :(. I may sew together the bits of all the rugs the little s0d's ripped and set a new trend!
 
I find it annoying too. I end up putting a warmer rug on than is needed because the lightweight rugs get destroyed so quickly. I also always need to put a full neck rug on because otherwise when the ponies spar, which they like to do a lot, they get their front feet in the neck of their pal's rug and rip all the front buckles off. I can't leave him unrugged because he's clipped.

I don't think I'd dare risk another bucas. Shame, as it fitted like a dream, but it's a lot of money to spend on something which quickly ends up as repair materials.

Gloi - sparring ponies made me chuckle - a bit :eek: for you though! I tried roughing my two off this winter. TB lasted to july, youngster 'til september. Crazy weather!
