Hi,

Can anyone suggest a good winter stable rug for an old pony? He won't be fully clipped, but might have a small clip if he starts getting hot. He is regularly ridden and kept in most of the time.

What thickness of rugs are peole having on thier ponies at the mo? He has a 100g stable rug - but is clearly going to need more.... He does feel the cold.

Any recomendations?

My old cob lives much the same sort of life, apart from being ridden, and will be blanket clipped soon.

At the moment, unclipped, he is in a 100g stable rug during the day and a 150 at night. I have a 300g rug with neck for the depths of winter plus one of those under rug duvets to layer up if its really cold. NZ wise I have a 100, a 300, and a 450g to cover all weather conditions!

This old pony isn't mine - i just teach the little girl that rides him and her mum asked what sort of rug to get for him... as my horse has about 5 rugs.. was a bit hard to advise for just one! I thought maybe about 250g... maybe 300 then as he is an old chap

thanks

My old mare is 34 & has a Weatherbeeta Orican heavyweight with full neck.

It fits really well, keeps her nice & warm & she hasn't managed to destroy it yet - this will be its 3rd winter - which is impressive as she's a rug wrecker.

My boy is 30 and has a blanket clip ,he is wearing a Comfort Zone thermal fleece at the moment as it is still quite mild where we are. He wears a Wetherbeeta 300 when it gets a bit colder ( but with no neck) Then I just add more layers when it gets colder, tho have just bought a from ECW a wetherbeeta under rug combo with a neck this year. Just go with how your horse feels and how cold it gets
