Looking for a lightweight/50gm turnout for Bo.

He gets really hot, itchy and fed up during Autumn rides, so I'm planning to give him a light clip in the next couple of weeks and possibly let it grow out for winter.

Just looking for something lightweight to chuck on him if the weather turns unexpectedly stormy etc (he doesn't like getting wet as it is 🙄).

He has a wide chest and very big shoulders and most rugs end up either sitting halfway up his neck or straining at the chest!

My 50g is one I got from local feed store thinking it would last a winter at each end, but it's heading into 5th winter and been hammered hard! It's a Legacy which has adjustable buckles with clips on the chest.
The rest are a mix of Shires and Weatherbeeta comfitec in the thicker ones. All 6ft on a just under 14hh fell mare.

I hadn't heard of Legacy so I went and looked them up. They look good and the adjustable buckles are just the job.

I hadn't either, I had to go across yard to check as couldn't remember make lol. It was pretty cheap as I recall and hasnt leaked in 5 yrs.
Edit, I see they dont do a 50g in current no neck turnout.

I used to give my haffie a low chaser clip and leave her out without a rug all winter. My thoughts were that it was the same as clipping her out fully and putting a rug on top and she never got cold. Fortunately she was never much of a roller, so at least I didn’t have mud removal issues when I wanted to ride.

I'd be quite happy to do that, i'm sure he'd be perfectly warm, but he hates getting wet as it is (I know...a Fell pony!).

I am hoping not to need it but thought it best to have one just in case.

Sometimes I think it’s us that doesn’t like to see them wet, not the horse. My pony looks equally miserable in a wet rug as he does when he’s naked 🤣 I would do a bib clip and then turn him out, see how he goes. He’s a fell, he won’t dissolve and you will be letting his body work as nature intended. Natives really don’t need rugs unless fully clipped. I really do believe that if we stopped rugging natives some of the lami issues and ems issues would reduce. I know OP pony isn’t either Lami or EMS but I feel these conditions are a cumulative thing which you can prevent and not rugging is one way to keep your pony healthy.

Nope. He starts galloping up and down and trashing the field.

I hate rugs and would happily never use another one, but I'm talking about having one on standby if the weather gets particularly dreadful. If he doesn't need it , it won't get used. But if he needs it, he'll wear it

For context I live on a very exposed hill up in the Pennines. It gets rough up here! Hence planning to let the clip grow out for winter.

I have a Rhino no-fill for Fellboy which has a V-shaped fastening at the chest and comes a bit further up the neck so keeps the shoulders drier (I don't use necks on rugs usually). We use thin liners underneath when needed which are easy to keep clean. If you go for a Horseware rug would recommend only Rhino and Rambo series for a Fell rather than the others, snd maybe go up a size.

I agree with you about only using a rug when you need to - but you can guarantee when you DO need one you will need it right then and want one to hand.

Thanks Catkin. I like the sound of the fastening on the Rhino.

Mine only had a rug in his later years, I just bought whatever 50g 6 ft rug was the cheapest. He was a chunk of a pony but we never had any issues with fit, from any of the random makes I ended up with.
