Rug recommendations please

I have a shires combo for Bertie. He lives in it and hasnt lost any mane.
Gin wears a shires at night and a Rambo supreme during the day and has lost mane. Gin is very sensitive though.

Rambo! Or Fal, although not tried those but they are well recommended also. The nylon lining prevents rubbing and gives a lovely shine to the coat. Mine live in their Rambo Wug Plus and Rambo Supreme rugs 24/7 in winter and none have ever rubbed.

We have used full neck Mastas for years and never had a rub.
 
I guess the sensible person realises that in all probability, each brand has a fit, which doesn't suit every horse (horses being different shapes and sizes yknow) and then accept that while some brands rub their horse - it might not rub another. And vice versa.

I agree - Masta rugs just don't fit Star at all across the back or over her bum.

Thanks for the recommendations, buying rugs is an expensive game and I don't want to make another mistake.

Question. IF Mark todd rugs have a reputaion for rubbing manes, wouldn't you think the manufactureres would be aware of this and change the design?
 
Well I guess it depends how many complaints versus how many happy customers.

I have had no issues with any rug really, apart from robinsons own brand which i bought on impulse, cost £20 - worth £20 - I guess you can't really complain there!

Best rug I ever had so far is between a Masta Zing on my 17hh IDx or a rambo on my old TX x QH. Both lasted beyond the call of duty and kept horses lovely and warm in all weathers.
 
OH has Mark Todd and Shires rugs - neither rubbed either of his horses manes out.

Mine haven't ever rubbed manes either - I have everything from Robinsons own brand (in their 8th winter) to Aerborn 2nds, to Mastas/Weatherbeetas.

My rugs do get cleaned twice a winter though - once midwinter and once at the end of winter, plus my stable rugs go through the machine monthly.
 
Wonder if it's something to do with the shape of the horses neck then.

Anyway - am now waiting delivery of a neckless Weatherbeeta Orican. No mane rubs there. Will be tried in conjunction with a Snuggy Hood.
 
One of mine has a very thick neck and everything rubs out his mane, so while turned out he goes with out a neck and when in the stable i put a kingsized duvet under his rug which covers up to his ears but doesn't rub his neck! I think its just trial and error with different makes but sadly it seems non of them make anything to fit mine!

Agree. Have also come to the conclusion that some horses have sensitive manes and will rub no matter how good the rug fit, and others will retain their mane no matter how badly the rug fits. Luck of the draw which horse you get really

My last horse got half of his mane entirely rubbed out no matter which rug was tried. New horse is a baby and is in cheap and cheerful rugs bas she'll outgrow them. No mane has been rubbed out at all even though the neck rug doesn't seem to fit that well. It goes over her easrs when she grazes and when she lifts her head her ears are pinned back under the rug (until she puts them forward) poor little soul
