Do turnout rugs need to be reproofed every time they are washed? If so what can I put on them myself (I have no washing machine big enough so ideal a spray etc)?
I would say to reproof after each wash.
I've used tent reproofer in the past. You can get a sprayer (like the type used to spray weeds) quite cheaply from somewhere like B& M Home bargains to put the rug proof in then just spray the rug and hang to dry.
. I'm a bit lazy now though so send them to the rug cleaner.
you can get it from equestrian clearance and most horse and outdoors places
Defo reproof them though dont want it to bucket down and your horse ending up soaked because its managed to seep though nothing worse than it
Depends on the rug manufacturer. I've had my Rambos for many years, some are 15 years old, and none have been reproofed and all are still totally waterproof. You can usually tell if they need reproofing as the sheen comes off the rug and you can see it's all dry. We can buy sprays over here to give the back a quick once over if it looks like it's lost it's proofing.
I use Fabsil tent reproofer. It comes in a liquid form which I paint on the rugs. It works well and is cheaper than paying for rugs to be washed and reproofed.
Might be worth seeing if you are local to a Decathlon sports store, as the ones in France now offer a wash and reproof service. Around £ 20 for a wash reproof. I sent an old Horseware rambo yesterday.
For other less valuable everyday rugs, I am using Fabsil,or waterproof sprays from Lidl.
