;HEY ANYONE we have a rug ripper in the field , been going on for a while , owner getting upset, does anyone have any suggestions , someone suggested chile powder but thats a problem if another horse rubs his face on it, eyes etc, so glad its not my problem but am asking for another owner, any solutions big or small , many thanks
 
My rugs were constantly ripped and I was at the end of my tether. I stopped it a bit by mixing mustard and water, put it in a sprayer and sprayed it daily on to my rugs. The ones you can buy ready made didnt make a difference. The only way it stopped was when I bought a Rambo Wug. Expensive but worth every penny as it stood up to the rug ripper and is still going strong 3 yrs on.
 
We had a really naughty rug ripper at our last yard. He'd developed the habit to such an extent that he'd even launch himself at an unrugged horse and hang on until he'd got a mouthful of coat. This resulted in a bleeding patch of bare skin on our pony and nice white regrowth. I can appreciate how the owner must feel but in the end the pony in question had to be isolated within the field using electric fencing and a feisty shetland for company. When the rugs were off in the summer and he was let back in with the others he seemed to have forgotten this particular "game" and he didn't bother the next winter. Having said that he was quite young and it did seem mischief rather than an ingrained habit. Good luck.
