Rug ripper

Help our WB and new horse,also ISH/WB 6 years of similar heights,are playing and frolicking so much in the paddock and the older gelding is ripping the other ones rugs.One rug was completely destroyed yesterday,leaving poor 6 year old naked in the drizzle.He had also rolled in the mud by the time i arrived at the yardare there any products deterring the horses grabbing the rugs,or do i have to separate the two reprobates,who are very good pals.

My friend had a WB who trashed her mum's cob's rugs like this. He treated the cob like a squeaky toy and would poke and nip to get a reaction (squeal) then grab the rug and pull. She tried Cribox and spraying the poor cob's rug with cheap perfume (he smelt like a whore's hanky )
None of this worked. On one memorable day he trashed three rugs before his owner decided to split the field with electric fencing, so they were company for each other but WB couldn't get close enough to rug rip.
This probably isn't terribly helpful! You could try painting the rug with something nasty tasting and non toxic?

After Bob did this to this brand new Premier Equine rug:

I bought a cheap lightweight (no-fill) rug for £40 inc P&P off eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/350637124045?var=620071718700&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
He now has this rug on top of his proper rugs so that this one gets trashed instead of the expensive ones! So far **touches wood** it has worked really well. The cheap rug has a couple of rips in, but I just stitched them up and don't have to worry about waterproofness!

I have considered buying some cheap rugs and will have a look on eBay when i get the time.Why is it always the boys who behave like this? It would be a shame to split the boys up as they are so loved up,in their own little way.

You could put a cheep rain sheet on top of good rug .

I do this too . . . both horses GD goes out with are serial rug bashers so I just pop a rain sheet on over top of his turnouts . . . works a treat.

I have found the Cribbox spray works better than anything.

Fortunately most of mine are good at not ripping rugs.

I did have an older horse and a youngster come stay. The both had rigs on with the original hoods which were attached separately.
They had been out for about 30 minutes when I realised that the old horse was stark naked. I went out to sort things out thinking that I had not done his chest strap up.
The rug and hood were in a heap and everything was still done up. The stitching on the leg straps was stretched but they were still attached.
I never worked out how the young horse managed to strip the old one!
